AFTERNOON PARTY OF WELCOME

MRS J. A. NEWELL HONOURED Dr. and Mrs J. A. Newell (Sydney!, who left Christchurch nearly 10 years ago to make their home in Australia, arrived in Christchurch on Sunday for a short visit. They are on their way back to Sydney from California, where they have spent several months. Mrs Newell is keenly interested in literary and dramatic work, and, during her residence in Christchurch she directed several reading and study groups. One of these groups, the Table Round, has continued on the lines laid down by her, and members have met regularly since her departure until the present. To welcome her back, members of this circle gave an afternoon party at Ballantynes yesterday in honour of Mrs Newell, who. on arrival, received a warm greeting and was presented with two posies. She described many interesting events of her trip, including Dr. Newell’s response to a call for a doctor received in mid-ocean from a millionaire’s yacht. Dr. Newell was transferred from the Niagara, on which he was travelling, to a pinnace which took him to the yacht, where he remained for five or six days until the yacht reached Honolulu. HAREWOOD GOLF CLUB ANNUAL DANCE AT WINTER GARDEN Small red pennants decorating ‘the ballroom of the Winter Garden last night warned guests of the various pitfalls which they might expect to encounter on the Harewood Golf Club’s links, and some realistic pictures of pine trees and golf bags helped to give an appropriate setting for the dance, which has become an annual feature of the club’s social activities. Mr C. L. Crowley was secretary of the organising committee, and club members who assisted him in making arrangements were Mrs J. L. Kerr, Misses Peggy Clowes, Marguerite Baxter, Winsome Robertson, Messrs L. Fleetwood, D. I. Macdonald, R. de G. Robilliard, D. Stratton, and B. J, Wilkes. Mr Roy Twyneham, president of the club, and Miss Lesley Twyneham were the guests of honour. A beautiful bouquet of flame-coloured flowers was presente’d to Miss Twyneham, who wore a frock of burgundy taffeta with navy taffeta trimmings. Miss Baxter wore a frock and a tailored coatee of- damask satin Patterned in an all-over design in brilliant green, blue, cherry, and white tonings on a daffodil background; Miss Robertson’s frock of black moss crepe was relieved with diamante belt, and a spray of white and primrose flowers at the neckline in front. DRAMATIC ENTERTAINMENT The monthly meeting of the Christchurch High School Old Girls’ Association, held last night, took the form of a dramatic entertainment which was enjoyed by more than 100 members. A violin solo, played by Miss Romola Griffiths, accompanied by Miss E. French, was much appreciated. Miss Pessy Hollander was producer for the two one-act plays presented by the drama circle, members of the casts being Misses E. Lockwood, Alma Davies, Joan Norrie, Adrienne Perkins, Margaret Moyle, Romola Griffiths, and Louise Balch for the first play, and Misses Peggy' Martin, Kathleen Allen, Nina Perkins, Noelle Caverhill, I. Glackin, and Isabel Caverhill for the second play.
