SOCIAL AT EAST EYRETON

RANGIORA MINISTERS , ASSOCIATION

ADDRESS AT MEETING

YESTERDAY

A paper on “The New German Faith” was read to the Rangiora Ministers’ Association by the Rev. J. A. F. Watson yesterday afternoon, when the association met at the Methodist manse, Woodend. The president (the Rev. W. Neale) presided. An invitation was received to attend a meeting of the Ministers’ Pacifist Society of Canterbury and Westland in Christchurch on July 30.

Presbyterian Guild Sunday

The annual Guild Day was observed at the John Knox Presbyterian Church, Rangiora, on Sunday. Members of the women’s guild of the church attended the evening service and afterwards entertained the choir to supper. Items were given by Mrs Norton, Misses B. Smith and R. Horrell, and Mr J. C. Hancox. Mrs A. H. Yates was the accompanist. Community singing was led by Mr C. J. Keir. Kan gi ora Fanciers’ Success Rangiora fanciers had outstanding success in the poultry section of the Marlborough Poultry, Pigeon, and Canary Club’s show at Blenheim last week. Mr F. H. Lovell, who exhibited gilverlaccd Wyandottcs, won a cup, a gold medal, a special prize, five firsts, and a second. With his entries of Plymouth Barred Rocks Mr W. A. Banks won a championship, a gold medal, a special prize, a first, and a second. Two second and two third prizes were won by Mr E. Wheeler with Black Orpingtons. Personal Mr J. O. Webber, who has been appointed headmaster of the Rangiora Borough School, arrived from Oxford with his wife and family on Saturday. Address to Bible Classes Bible-class work in New Zealand and abroad was explained by Mr Manson, travelling secretary, to members of John Knox Presbyterian Bible classes, Rangiora, on Sunday evening, Mr Manson illustrated his address with lantern slides.

CARGO OF EXPLOSIVES FROM AUCKLAND

MIRO UNLOADS AT KAIKOURA The schooner Miro arrived at Kaikoura from Auckland with a cargo of explosives for the Public Works Department, to use in the construction of the South Island Main Trunk railwav. This is the first boat to discharge cargo at Kaikoura wharf for more than a year. KAIKOURA CHURCH DANCE An enjoyable social evening was held at the Hapuku Hall, Kaikoura, recently. The time was spent in games, community singing, and dancing. Songs were given by Messrs A. Morton and J. Carter, the accompanists being Miss Harle and Mr F. S. H. Warner. Music for dancing was played by Mrs J. C. Smith, Mrs Vaughan, Miss L. Lane.

Lodge Meeting

The fortnightly meeting of the Loyal Heart of Oak Lodge, M.U., 1.0.0. F., was held recently. N.G. Bro. E. W. Harris presided. Sick pay amounting to £27 16s 8d and a funeral benefit amounting to £3O were passed for payment. Two new members were initiated. Bro. P. M. Kerr, P.G., acted as L.M., and Bros. Jas. Peoples, P.G., and F. B. Sabiston, P.G., acted as conductors. Two applications for membership were received. It was decided to enter for the efficiency competition and to apply for a visit from the ritual committee. It was decided to Invite Loyal Cheviot Lodge to the next meeting.

DANCE AT WAIPARA A social evening in aid of the Glenmark Tennis Club was held in the hall on Thursday evening. The euchre prize was won by Mrs Darroch and Mr A. Ferguson. Prizes were also won by Mrs Darroch and Mr H. Campbell. A competition was won by Mr A. Aydon. Music was supplied by Mrs Fe’-guson, and extras were played by Miss M. Whyte and Mr E. Robins. Messrs E. Whyte and L. Cooper were masters of ceremonies. SOCIAL AT WEST EYRETON A successful social organised by the West Eyreton Hall Committee was held in the hall. Card competitions were won by Mrs A. Chambers and Mr E. Gartery, and the Monte Carlo dance by Miss M. Bennett and Mr W. Busch. The music for dancing was played by Mr E. Campbell, and extras by Messrs L. Hyde, T. Pester, and R. Brain. Mr H. Pester was master of ceremonies. Among those present were Mesdames A. Chambers, T. Pester, R. Reid, J. MeLaughlan, E. Campbell, Cecil Bennett, W. Wilson, N. McLaughlan, G. Washington, W. Busch, R. Begg, L. Hyde, Misses M, Mclntosh, Gladys Pester, Nancy Mclntosh, Jean Prouse, D, Bennett, Enid Jackson, Mavis McNivan, E. Reid, Margaret Jackson, M. Glew, M. Bennett, Daisy Reid, Myrtle Feather, Joan Bennett, J. Begg, Vera McLaughlan, Eileen Brain, Sylvia Wilson, Pearl Brain, and R. Hide.

At a social held in the East Eyreton Hall recently, euchre prizes were won by Misses Nancy Hassall and Jean Higginson, Messrs Mitchell (Fernside) and J. Paget.

Music for dancing was played by Mr F. Miller and Mr C. Giles acted as master of ceremonies.

Among those present were Mesdames T. Giles. W. Martin, M. Piper, R. Cherry, S. Mcllwrick, J. Paget, R. C. Smith, Misses O. Baynon, N. Hassall, M. Rice, P. Giles, I. Clothier, J. Higginson, E. Merrinu and A. Merrin.

MUTUAL IMPROVEMENT SOCIETY AT HORRELVILLE

The, fortnightly meeting of the Horrelville Mutual Improvement Society was held recently in the Methodist Church. Mr R. Paterson presided over a good attendance. Mr F. A. Sheat gave a talk on the “History of the Horrelville Methodist Church.” Messrs Benny and A. Yates accorded a vote of thanks to the speaker.

SCHOOLS’ COMPETITION AT PREBBLETON

Playing in the schools’ competition matches, Prebbleton girls beat Halswell by 3 goals to 2 at basketball. The football team also won its match with Halswell by 4 points to 3. Both matches were played at the Prebbleton Domain.

ELLESMERE SUB-UNION RESULTS OP SATURDAY’S MATCHES The following were the results of the competition matches of the Ellesmere Rugby Sub-Union on Saturday: First Grade —Irwell 6, Leeston 3; Southbridge 9, Dunsandel 0; Waihora 14. Lincoln 6; College 0, Prebbleton 0. Second Grade—Seuthbridge 57, Waihora 0; College 29. Lincoln 0; United 14, Prebbleton 3; Leeston a bye. RANGIORA WOMEN’S CLUB The winner of the July bogey round of the Rangiora Women’s Golf Club was Mrs W. Keetley, with a card of 7 down.

PRESENTATIONS AT OXFORD

Mr J. O. Webber, who has been headmaster of the Oxford District High School for more than four years, and who has been transferred to the Rangiora Borough School, was the guest of honour at a gathering held in the Sunday School on Sunday. Mr Webber has been a lay-reader. He was presented with a bound prayer book. Mrs Webber was presented with a book, and Miss Joan Webber, who has assisted at the Sunday School, was presented with a copy of Sir James Barrie’s plays.

In the Town Hall a social was given by the school children and the parents. A presentation of a rug was made to Mr Webber, and a clock to Mrs Webber. The Tennis Club presented Miss Joan Webber with a clock.

WEATHER AT KIRWEE

During June rain fell on 15 days at Kirwee, with a maximum fall of 93 points on June 24. The total fall for the month was 3.16 inches. For the corresponding month last year the fall was 1.63 inches, and in 1935 2.27 inches. The fall for six months was 15.75 inches, compared with 21.10 inches for the same period last year. Hockey Match

Playing in the Malvern women’s hockey competition at Kirwee on Saturday, Hororata beat Kirwee by 3 goals to 0. Mr J. D. Henderson was the referee.

EAST EYRETON PERSONAL NOTES Mr L. Diedrich (Hariharl) is spending a holiday with Mr and Mrs Patterson. Miss B. Mclver is spending a holiday with Mr and Mrs Proudlock.

RUSSELL’S FLAT PERSONAL NOTES Miss G. Searle {Russell’s Plat) has been staying with relatives in Hornby and Christchurch. Miss A. Williams has returned home after staying at Kowai Bush. _ Mrs Irvine (“Wyndale”) is visiting her mother at Amber ley. Misses Monica Duncan and Pheobe Reid (SprtnfifteMJ have left to attend the Dominion conference of tne Women’s Division of the New Zealand Farmers’ Union at Wellington.

WOMEN’S DIVISION OF FARMERS’ UNION

OURUHIA The Ouruhia branch of the Women’s Division of the New Zealand Farmers’ Union held its monthly meeting in the Ouruhia schoolroom. Mrs W. P. Spencer presided. The secretary was asked to send a letter of appreciation and thanks to the Waimairi branch of the New Zealand Farmers’ Union for the enjoyable evening spent at its social. The secretary advised that the Belfast branch had sent an invitation to the Ouruhia branch to attend its birthday party on August 19. Mrs Jones.- of Styx, gave a demonstration on “Something New from Something Old.” Competitions resulted as follows:—Best bloom, Mrs Marsh 1, Mrs Dunlop 2; sugar-bag article. Miss H. Bell 1, Mrs Marsh 2. It was decided that the branch should work for the Nurse Maude Association, and other associations.

RUSSELL’S PLAT The monthly meeting of the Russell’s Flat branch of the Women's Division of the New Zealand Farmers’ Union was held at the home of Mrs Wason. Mrs Palmer (president) presided. One now member was welcomed. A demonstration on pastry-making was given by Mrs hj. Cooper. It was decided that the president should attend the Dominion conference in Wellington. Competitions were won as follows:—Bowl of winter foliage: Mrs Palmer 1, Mrs Henry 2. Coat hangar: Miss I. Hawkins 1 and 2. Egglegs Cake: Miss L Hawkins 1. Best bloom: Miss Shanon 1, Miss Duncan 2. The hostesses were Mesdames Maber and Ifcniraitb.

DARFIELD Mrs A. A. Stott presided at the monthly meeting of the Barfield branch of the Women’s Division of the New Zealand Farmers’ Union. It was reported that arrangements were in hand for the birthday party in August. Lectures and readings on interesting subjects were given by several members. The results of the competitions were:— Best bloom, Mrs R. Duncan 1, Miss N. Hennessy 2. Mrs B. Reardon and Mrs A. Stott (equal) 3: groceries. Mrs B. Reardon 1, Mrs W. Stott 2, Mrs A. Bringans 3; seagrass stool. Mrs W. Stott 1, Miss Spriggs 2, Mrs Black 3. The hostesses were Mesdames Black, Barltrop. Beatty, and Loveridge.
