HOCKEY

TRINITY LEADS IN COMPETITION

PLAY UNDER DIFFICULT CONDITIONS

Although the grounds were in bad condition on Saturday, all three senior hockey matches provided keen and interesting hockey. The game between Trinity and Redcliffs was fast nad exciting, Trinity winning by one goal to nil. Sydenham played a drawn game with Selwyn, neither side scoring. Technical beat University in a keen, fast game, by four goals to three, although University was one goal ahead at haU-time. The results give Trinity a lead of three and a half points, with probably only three more matches to be played. Selwyn is second with seven points, and Technical, which still has a match against University to play, has 6£ points. The schools' competitions was postponed on account of the grounds.

The following table shows the positions of the teams:—

Technical and University have a match to play.

TRINITY (1) v. REDCLIFFS (0)

A thick coating of sticky mud in the circles made scoring difficult in the game between Trinity and Redcliffs. With D. Loader away with the New Zealand team, Trinity rearranged the players, P. McCormick playing right half and T. Brown going into the centre and S. Tissaman replacing P. McCormick cs left wing. Both teams attempted to play a short passing game, but the state of the ground proved too big a handicap. Finding it difficult to maintain a foothold, players of both sides frequently committed breaches that would have been avoided under better ground conditions. With drier grounds near the Side lines both sets of wing forwards gave good displays, but their centres were frequently lost in the mud in midfield. Midway through the second spell W. Bowden received a cut on the head and the game was held up whilst he received attention from a member of the fat. John Ambulance.

Redcliffs opened the game with a strong offensive, but "sticks" while shooting from a penalty corner nullified the advantage. R. Davies went through on Trinity's right, but his shot went astray. Trinity came with a solid combined rush, led by Jones and E. McCormick scored the only goal with a shot that gave the Redcliffs custodian no chance. Trinity 1, RedclifTs 0. Rndcliffe and N. Bowden led the Redcliffs forwards in a strong raid which was repulsed by Barnhill, who conceded a corner which was cleared by o, ra Jk Grafton went well down on Kedcliffs left to centre, but Barnhill was again safe and half-time came with the score:— Trinity 1, Redcliffs 0. Play was fast and exciting in the second spell, as both teams attacked solidly. J. Burke and S. Bowden put up a brilliant defence against Trinity's combined rushes. W. Bowden was keeping the Redcliffs forwards well supplied with the ball, but their efforts were nullified by the sound play of the Trinity backs. Both sets of forwards had numerous chances but the sticky mud in the circles proved too big' a handicap for clever stick play. Slipping in the mud caused endless breaches of the rules, and no score was registered in the second spell. Final score: Trinity 1, Redcliffs 0.

Referees: Messrs C. Bellamy and C. C. Holland. SELWYN (0) v. fYDENHAM (0) The ground conditions for the match between Sydenham and Selwyn were very bad. and on numerous occasions there was a melee in the goalmouth with the ball sticking in the thick mud. C. Hore filled the gap in the Selwyn half line caused by the absence of T. Burtt. The Sydenham forwards lacked finish, frequently making a lot of ground but losing the advantage by erratic passing. Cornish and Moir played dashing games In Selwyn's forward line, and M. Watson was the pick of the halves.

Sydenham was the first to break away, to be stopped by C. Hore. who transferred play to midiield, and Moir went down on Selwyn's leit to centre to Cornish, who dashed in to try a scoring shot, which Rhind put aside. Watson sent Lohrey and Wormald away to invade Sydenham's goal, but Moir went too far down before centring, and Dash cleared well upfield to send Pullan away. A well-timed centre was missed by Harrison, and Watson relieved. N. Burtt was well down to Syii.'-'ham's goal line, to be stopped by Hamilton. Simpson started a Sydenham raid which gained a penalty corner, which Hearne cleared. Half-time came .vith no score.

Selwyn had the better of the opening stages of the second half, and Rhind made some good saves. Sydenham finally forced play to the other end to gain a corner, which brought no result. Sydenham stared a series of raids on the Selwyn goal, and a couple of melees in the mouth were strenuously defended. Selwyn reversed the attack, and a long scramble in the mud in front of Sydenham's goal was finally cleared by Simpson. Perry intercepted a Selwyn rush and sent Milne and Hall away in a passing rush, which Watson stopped, and Lohrey and Wormald carried play to the Sydenham end. Simpson gained ground for Sydenham before transferring to Milne, who went well down before losing possession through hard hitting. Final score:

Selwyn 0, Sydenham 0. Referees: Messrs A. L. Graham and H S. Cordery.
