Good form was shown bv all cyclists, however, and the speed of the race on the outward journey often reached 30 miles an hour.

AVON CLUB'S THIRTY-ONE-MILES EVENT
The Avon Amateur Cycling Club continued its series of weekly road races with a 31-miles event on Saturday afternoon, starting and finishing at Mairehau. Six riders put up a fine sprint at the finish, Harwood winning by about six inches. The placings were:— F. P. Harwood (lmin), 72min 22sec, 1; E. C. Hall (lmin), 72min 22 l-ssec, 2; N. Ayers (4min), 75min 22 2-ssec, 3; H. G. Ayers (3jmin), 74min 37 3-ssec, 4; W. D. Marks (2Jmin), 73min 52 4-ssec, 5; L. R. Hunt (lmin), 72min 23sec, 6: J. H. Halliday (smin), 76min 23 2-ssec, 7; J. V. O'Donnell (scr), 72min 42sec, 8; JV. Martin (scr), 72min 42 l-ssec, 9. Fastest time was registered by Harwood, in first place, and second fastest by Hall, who filled second place. ROAD RACE AT MAIREHAU The North Canterbury Centre of the New Zealand Athletic and Cycling Union held an 18-miles road race at Mairehau on Saturday afternoon. Twenty riders started, with J. Butcher and D. A. Swanston on the scratch mark, conceding a limit of 6Jmin. The scratch men failed by ljmin to pick up the leaders. Results:— E. A Cox (handicap 4Jmin), time 55min 6see, 1: F. Parkin f4Jmin), 55min 6 l-ssec. 2; G. M. Annett (2Jmin), 53min 28sec, 3; G. Johnson (2£min), 53min 55sec, 4; C. E. Hall (lmin), 52min 25 l-ssec, 5; A. Clemence (lmin). 52min 25 2-ssec, 6; C. B. Carr (GJmin). 58min lOsec, 7; D. A. Swanston (scr). 52min ssec. 8. Swanston registered fastest time. FLYING KILOMETRE MEW WORLD RECORD (UNITED TRESS ASSOCIATION—COPYRIGHT.) MILAN, July 9. A Frenchman, Michel Pecquex, broke the world record for a flving kilometre, cycling the distance in 64sec. In this issue, the Railway Department advertises particulars of the special train arrangements and fares for the Waimate District Hunt Club's races on Saturday, July 17. A one-day service has been arranged.
