AMALGAMATION OF LOCAL BODIES

VISIT OF MINISTER TO RANGIORA

Advice that the Minister for Internal Affairs (the Hon. W. E. Parry) intends to visit North Canterbury to discuss his amalgamation with local bodies in the district has been received by the Rangiora County Council through the Rt. Hon. G. W. Forbes, M.P. No definite date has been fixed ior the visit. . The Minister has promised to keep in mind the resolution passed fay the council urging that provision be madein amalgamation proposals for the taking of a poll of ratepayers on the question. He has also said that he will be pleased to go fully into the representations when he is in the district Most local bodies in North Canterbury are in agreement on the need for a poll.

No Cemetery Site Offers

No offers of land suitable for a cemetery site had been received by the Rangiora Borough Council up to yesterday afternoon, although offers were invited about a month ago. From five to 10 acres of land outside the borougn is required. The committee set up by the Rangiora Borough Council and the Rangiora County Council to obtain fresh options on suitable land will meet to-day. when the offers are due to close. . Neighbouring county councils invited to ioin in the scheme to provide a nubMc cemetery for the Rangiora district have not yet replied.

Sergeant-Major G. A. Parsons, a member of the New Zealand Coronation contingent, will return to Rangiora to-day.

Workers' Educational Association

A second series of six lectures on social psychology was begun at the weekly meeting of the Rangiora branch of the Workers' Educational Association last evening. In the first series, the lecturer (Miss D. M. Maginness) dealt with man as an individual, and in the present section of the course she will discuss man and has social relations.

Mountaineering

Four members of the Rangiora Mountaineering and Tramping Club went to Porter's Pass during the weekend. Good skating was enjoyed on Saturday night.

MOUNT HERBERT COUNTY COUNCIL

A rate of Id in the £ was struck on the capital value of all rateable land in the Mount Herbert County, at the monthly meeting of the council The rate is inclusive of the levy of the North Canterbury Hospital Board and the interest and sinking fund on a loan of £ISOO. ~ , Cr. A. R. H. Gardiner presided. Advice was received from the ValuerGeneral that the county would be revalued during the current year, and it was expected the work would be completed in time for local rating and land tax purposes at March 31, 1938. The North Canterbury Hospital Board wrote stating that the levy payable by the council this year amounted to £716 2s, an increase on last year's levy (£649 0s 8d) of £67 Is 4d. It was reported that road classification signs had now been erected at suitable points of access to the county. It was decided to call tenders for 500 yards of metal at Port Levy. The foreman's report stated that maintenance work, crushing, and grading had been the principal activities during the month. The council passed a motion of sympathy with the relatives of Mr W. A. Gray, of Teddington, who died recently.

SEVERE FROSTS AT HORORATA

Weather records taken by Mr Jewell, 'Terrace Station," Hororata, show that rain fell on 10 days in June. The maximum fall was on June 24, when 67 points were registered. The rainfall for June was 3.07 inches, compared with 2.16 inches for June, 1936. The rainfall for the year to date is 18.87 inches, compared with 24.91 inches for the same period in 1936. Twenty-two frosts were registered last month, the most severe being on June 28 and 29, each being 16 degrees. A frost of 18 degrees, the most severe this winter, was registered on Saturday, July 3.

Mr R. Roberts, of the Hororata post office, has been transferred to the Lincoln post office. Mr B. McKenzie, who spent the week-end with his parents, Mr and Mrs A. McKenzie, "West End," returned to Christchurch on Sunday.

WOMEN'S MISSIONARY UNION AT STYX

The annual meeting of the Styx Presbyterian Women's Missionary Union and Ladies' Guild was held on Thursday. The Rev. J. Farrar presided. The secretary's report showed that good work had been carried out during the year and the interest of members had been well maintained. Mr Farrar gave a short address on woman s loyalty to the church. The following officers were elected: —President. Mrs J. Farrar; vice-presi-dents, Mesdames R. M. Donaldson and J Marwick; secretary, Mrs J. Dixon; treasurer, Mrs J. Marwick; harvest field, Mrs W. Barnes; M.M.8.L., Mrs M. Duke.

KIRWEE MOTHERS' UNION

The ninth annual meeting of the Kirwee Mothers' Union was held recently. Mrs G. Turner presided. The annual report and balance-sheet were read and adopted. It was decided to bring gifts of clothing to the next monthly meeting, to be forwarded to th" St. Saviour's Orphanages. The following officers were elected: —President. Mrs George Turner; vicenresidents. Mesdames Devonshire and Kelly; honorary secretary. Mrs P. A. Turner; honorary treasurer, Mrs J. Anderson.

Bridge Match

The second bridge match between Darfield and Kirwee for the challenge cup was played at Kirwee recently. Kirwee winning. The top scorers for Darfield were Miss Stewart and Mr L Clinton and Mrs Suncknell and Mr G. Begg were the top scorers for Kirwee.

AKAROA BASKETBALL

Playing on the Akaroa recreation •round on Saturday, the Little River basketball A team beat Akaroa High School by 15 goals to 10. Miss S. Brown was referee. Personal

Mr J. D. Smith has returned from a vi=it to Christchurch. Mr R Bruce. "Glencan-igh," Akaroa. v'll leave at the end of the week for Wellington to join the Maui Pomare.

CONCERT AT CUST

A concert given by members of the Horrelville Glee Club, was held in the Institute Hall. The choir sang part-songs, hymns, duets in character, and solos. Bouquets were presented to Mrs Barker, Miss Horrell, and Mrs R. G. Logan, the accompanist.
