VISIT OF COUNT VON LUCKNER
GOVERNMENT'S ATTITUDE EXPLAINED
NO SPECIAL RESTRICTION PROPOSED
(FSesa 4.SSOCIATTO* T»LXOBAM.} WELLINGTON, July 5. In an interview to-day, the Act-ing-Minister for Customs (the Hon. M. Fagan) said that from statements which had from time to time appeared in the press about the possible visit to New Zealand of Count Felix von Luckner, it seemed that some misapprehension existed as to the purpose of his visit to the Dominion for which there did not appear to be the slightest foundation. "111-considered statements in matters such as this frequently grounded upon incorrect premises," said Mr Fagan, "do not make for that spirit of international goodwill and comity which is so desirable at all times, and never more so desirable than at the present juncture in world affairs. It was particularly unfortunate that such unfounded rumours should be circulated at a time when Mr Nash, having received hospitality and goodwill from the German authorities, was engaged in negotiating trade arrangements about our primary products with Germany, I which would prove of very great benefit to our people. I "As for the Government, said Mr I Fagan, "the Count would be treated in exactly the same manner as any other distinguished visitor to New I Zealand, and he would be permitted [ to land without any special restriction. New Zealand has a welldeserved reputation for its hospitality to visitors, and New Zealand would, I feel sure, always see to it that any particular visitor is treated in a manner consistent with that reputation." The Government desired to emphasise that, under the law at present in force in New Zealand, there was ample provision to ensure the immediate departure of any visitor who acted in any way subversive to the peace, order, and good government of New Zealand.
