MINE CLOSED AFTER FLOOD

GOVERNMENT HELP SOUGHT FOR HIKURANGI

(PRESS ASSOCIATION TXI.F.GRAM.) WHANGAREI July 5. In the flood last week, when the township of Hikurangi was threatened, the Hikurangi Coal Company's newlydeveloped mine was so badly flooded that Mr L. J. Stevens, chairman of directors, told Mr R. Nesbitt, chairman of the Hikurangi Town Board, that the mine has definitely been closed. Mr Stevens said he could not ask the Government for furtlier assistance, and the company itself was unable to meet the cost of removing the water from the mine.

An emergency meeting of business people was held last night, when the situation was fully discussed. It was decided to send a deputation to Wellington to ask the Government for assistance. The meeting subscribed £SO towards the expenses of the delegation.
