TURF GOSSIP

Reminder Nominations for the South Canterbury Hunt steeplechase meeting will close at 9 p.m. on Friday.

Brood Mare Drowned Mr J. Porter, of Akaroa, who controls a stud farm at Kinloch, suffered a' severe loss last week. Lady Desmond fell over a bank into a creek, and as she suffered a broken leg in the fall, she was unable to extricate herself and was drowned. Lady Desmond was a high-class racehorse and could claim some attractive breeding, being by Limond from Bronze, one of the best gallopers of her time. Lady Desmond was the dam of Diamond, who would undoubtedly have had an outstanding record as a steeplechaser but for his unfortunate mishap at Riccarton (when contesting last year's Grand National Steeplechase) which necessitated his destruction. The mare has been unlucky at the stud, as two others of her progeny met with fatal accidents. At the time of her mishap, she was in foal to Solicitor Genera).

A Futile Protest

In spite of previous objections being disallowed, the Southland Racing Club is again opposing the application of the Oamaru Jockey Club for the day following New Year's Day next year. The grounds of the yearly objection are that the Southland club has raced on January 2 and 3 for many years, and that the Oamaru meeting has a damaging effect in that it attracts horses who might otherwise go to Invercargill. The Southland club is supported in its objection by the Wyndham club, which races on New Year's Day. Last year the secretary of the Oamaru Jockev Club visited Wellington to put his club's position before the Racing Conference, but shortly before the matter was to be dealt with, the Southland objection was withdrawn. It was then thought that the southern clubs had decided that it was no use pursuing their claims further, and the lodging of another objection has come as a general surprise. Slight Ailment One of the surprises of the acceptances for the first day of the Wellington Racing Club's winter meeting was that the Great Northern Steeplechase winner, Irish Comet, was not paid up for. His owner stated that the horse had contracted a cold, and it was decided not to send him to Trentham. He hoped that he would soon recover, as it was intended to send him to Riccarton for the Grand National Steeplechase. All Ages Sky Pilot, four years, and Streamline, Sporting Song, and Padnos. each five years, are the youngest horses in the Wellington Steeplechase. Tudor is a seven-year-old, as also are Brigadore and Santoft. Manawatu. Black Marlin. and Trisox are eight, Valpeen nine, Don Erma 10. Pahu 11, and the "grand-daddy" is Billy Boy, who is

Incident Recalled R. *S. Bagby, who is at Trentham to try to win the Wellington Steeplechase with Black Marlin or the Winter Hurdles with him or Lord Val, was successful in the Winter Hurdle Race in 1923 on First Born. On that occasion First Born was responsible for one of the most amazing feats ever seen on a racecourse. In the preliminaries First Born was restricted to a very slow canter, but Bagby, who had his head down, apparently forgot the hurdle by the winning post. When First Born reached it a crash appeared unavoidable, but the horse leapt into tho air Jike a cat. cleared the obstacle cleanly, and landed on all four feet on the other side. It was a wonderful feat of agility. First Born, a brown gelding by Thurnham, was good class as a jumper. He was owned by Mr J. B. Gaisford, now farming in North Auckland.

Unlucky Owner Miss Dorothy Paget has had the misfortune to lose another horse. Her 5000 guineas colt, Ormstead. died last month, and a week later Blandonette was destroyed, following an accident at Lewes races. Malay Lady, the indirect cause of Blandonette's death, is also owned by Miss Paget. Blandonette stumbled and fell about a furlong from the finish of the Three-year-old Handicap. As she was getting to her feet she was cannoned into by Malay Lady and thrown into the rails. The crash broke one of Blandonette's shoulders.

The Blandford Blood The continued success of Blenheim as a sire in England and on the Continent will be encouraging to the owners of sons of Blandford, both here and in Australia. The best two-year-old seen out so far in England this season is Mirza 11, who at his first start won the Bedford Stakes at Newmarket in effortless style by six lengths from His Majesty's Foxbrush. Mirza II is a son of Blenheim, and the flying mare Mnmtaz Mahal. Blenheim is also the sire of the unbeaten Italian colt Donatello, who cantered away with the Italian Derby recently and was to have gone to France to compete in the Grand Prix. In Erance Blenheim is represented bv Drap d'Or, winner of the French 2000 Guineas, beating Le Ksar, who won the English race of the same name, and also by Blue Bear, winner of the French 1000 Guineas. The Elderslie Stud's importation. Solicitor General, Is bred on similar lines to Blenheim, both horses being sons of Blandford out of mares by sons of Desmond, and with Ayrshire appearing close up in the breeding of both their dams.

Sky Pilot Fancied By a process of elimination of the horses engaged in to-day's Wellington Steeplechase, who raced at Ellerslie, only Tudor and Sky Pilot are left, and between them they may hold the key to the situation, says an Auckland writer. Tudor's efforts this year are well known, and he is a litter horse now than when he took on the Winter Steeplechase three weeks back. With 12-0. the maximum weight allowed the handicapper, he will be tested in every department—his ability to handle very bad ground (he has previously wen at Trentham). fencing qualities, and stamina, as well as being able to carry weight, which he has also proved himself capable of doing. The hack steeplechase contests at the Great Northern meeting often produce an outstanding performer; a few seasons back Tudor established himself in this wise. Sky Pilot, winner ot both the minor cross-country races at Ellerslie last month, is a good type and one selected to go much further at the crcss-ccuiitry game, so that with 0-9 he is finally selected as the most likely Wellington Steeplechase winner. His weight is not prohibitive, he stays well —like Collision on the first day at Ellerslie. Sky Pilot's jockey on the final day merely toyed with his opponents —and, what is perhaps more to the point in view ot the horse's undoub'.cd ability, he will be ridden by probably the best steeplechase jockey cf to-dny. For this combination of reasons Sky Pilot is selected to beat Tudor and "company to-day.

TROTTING NOTES

Trotting Conference The annual meeting of trotting club representatives will be held in Wellington to-morrow. The most important business is a remit by the president of the Conference seeking approval of the draft Rules of Trotting as prepared and forwarded to affiliated clubs. There are no very drastic changes proposed; but as the present rules were drafted in 1906 it is only to be expected that some alterations are necessary to bring them up-to-date and made easier for reference. Copies of the proposed new rules have been considered by the different clubs, and it is not expected there will be any opposition to their adoption. An Auckland Remit

There may be opposition to the Auckland club's remit, which aims at having the number of members of the New Zealand Trotting Association increased from nine to 10 and giving the North Island the exVra representation. At present rule 35 says the association shall have Us headquarters at Christchurch and shall be composed of nine members, six of whom shall be resident in the South Island and four in the North Island. If the remit is carried the Auckland club will also propose the following:—"ln the year 1938 all the members of the association shall retire from office. In the year 1939 and in each year thereafter five members of the association shall retire from office, three of whom shall be residents of the South Island and two residents of the North Island. The five members to retire in the year 1939 shall be determined by lot, and in every subsequent year the members who have been longest in office shall retire. The length of time a member has been in office shall be computed from his last election."

The work of the New Zealand Trotting Association has been carried on with satisfaction to all sections of the trotting community, and the idea of all the members retiring is not likely to be looked on with general favour. The Auckland club, however, is evidently keen on introducing new blood into the administration: but the election this year has shown that clubs are well satisfied with the present order of things. Not a single new nomination was received and the retvring members were returned unopposed. At Oamaru

Glenastle failed to run into a place in the Oamaru Trot Handicap, of one mile and a half, on Saturday; but he gave an improved showing over a mile and a quarter in the Waikaura Handicap, when he ran second to Dusky Sound. Glenastle. with one win to his credit, has shown promise, and only three years old there is time for improvement. He is by Guy Parrish from Logan's Pet, a sister to Kid Logan and half-sister to Waitaki Girl, Stanley Bingen, and Bingen Chief. A Well-bred Novice

Cyrano, who finished third to Loyal Pat and Dusky Sound at Oamaru on Saturday, is a four-year-old gelding by Wrack from Nantwich. and is trained by J. Henderson. Cyrano has yet to win a race, but his finishing effort was full of promise. He is one of the well-bred stock from Durbar Lodge, his dam, Nantwich, who left Renegade and Greenmantle. being by Nelson Bingen from Pearlchild, one of the most successful brood mares ever at the stud in New Zealand. Classic Racing The Winton Trotting Club has decided to include a race for three-year-old pacers on its 1938 programme—the race to be called the Winton Juvenile Stakes (harness, one mile and a quarter), of £2OO. with a trophy valued about £2O, and prizes allotted from the stake for the first four placings. Nominations will be called some time in September, and probably those of yearlings for the following year will also be taken at the same time. It was also decided that the race be confined to three-year-olds owned and trained south of Waitaki. F. J. Smith's Success The Takanini trainer, F. J. Smith, has concluded the season with 40 firsts, 32 seconds, and 19 thirds, the earnings being £6320. exclusive of trophies. With the exception of Musketeer, who won one race for S. Matthews, and Levity, who was ridden by R. Coleman Smith was associated with the stable winners. Nervie's Last, with five firsts, four seconds, and two thirds headed the list with £IO9O and was closely followed by King's Warrior, whose two wins, three seconds, and two thirds netted £1045. Nervie's Last has been successful at all distances, and, although not a proved stayer, won over two miles in 4min 26 3-ssec. while he recorded 3min 16 J-ssec for second money at Ashburton. King's Warrior showed his true worth in winning the Auckland Trotting Cup in 4min 20 4-sscc and in dead-heating with Bonnv Azure in the Dominion Handicap, both pacers recording 4min 22sec. Following is a list of principal winners, number of races won. and value of stakes credited to the Auckland stable: Nervie's Last <5), £1090: King's Warrior f2) liw?
