MATCHES FIRED AT RANGIORA

A 12 bird clay pigeon handicap match fired by the North Canterbury Gun Club at Rangiora on Saturday afternoon was the final event for two trophies. D. S. Davison won Turner and Le Brun's aggregate cup for three matches with a possible (36), and also received Ashby, Bergh and Company's first barrel aggregate with 34 out of 36.

The handicap match resulted in a tie between Davison, A. N. Turner, and D. S. Doreen, all on, and they divided the prize money and the optional sweep. There were 16 competitors in a six-bird sweep and eight divided the money. Davison, G. A. Bruere, and C. Malzard were all on in a ninebird match, in which 11 took part, and divided. Turner won a final nine-bird event from seven competitors, live members dividing the second prize. R.S.A. Smoke Concert

To receive the report of the president (Mr J. W. Macleod) on the recent annual conference of the New Zealand Returned Soldiers' Association in Wellington, the Rangiora association held a well-attended smoke concert in the club rooms on Saturday evening. Mr Macleod, who was the association's delegate to the conference, presided, and visitors were present from other associations. After Mr Macleod had spoken on the business transacted by the conference, the following toast list was honoured: "The King," proposed by the chairman; "The Christchurch Returned Soldiers' Association." proposed by the chairman and replied to by Mr A. W. Mewton; "Local Bodies, proposed by Mr C. How, and replied to by Messrs R. Peach and E. R. Percy; "Kindred Associations," proposed by the chairman and responded to by representatives from Kaiapoi, Amberley, and Lyttelton. Items were given by Messrs T. Hertnon, L. Shirley, N. Spain, W. C. Couch, H. Saxton, and W. Fahey.

Cycling Club's Affairs

Inability to arouse sufficient interest among members to hold road races is causing concern to the committee of the Rangiora Amateur Cycling Club. For a club race arranged a week ago, only three riders attended prepared to start and the race was cancelled. An open race sponsored by the committee earlier in the season attracted practically no support from Rangiora riders.

The secretary (Mr R. Thiele) said on Saturday that nothing would be done yet about a suggested ■windingup of the club's affairs, but that a meeting wouW be called to consider tin matter.

Rangiora's Rainfall With 2.75 inches of rain recorded in Rangiora last month, the total fall for the six months ended on June 30 is 12.67 inches, which exceeds the average for that period over the last 18 years by about half an inch. On account of the phenomenal fall in February, 1936, the total for the first six months of last year was 21.37 inches, while the average is only 12.09 inches. Bible Class Rally

Members of Rangiora Bible classes met in the John Knox Presbyterian Church yesterday afternoon to hear an address by Mr Keith Cree, of Christchurch. Mr Cree took as his subject "The Transforming Power of God." The rally was one of a series arranged by the Rangiora Ministers' Association.

Motor-cars Collide

Motor-cars driven by Arthur James Buckley, of Lyttelton. and Athol Raymond Smith, of Hayland, Rangiora, collided at the corner of the Ashley Gorge and White Rock roads, near Loburn, early on Saturday afternoon. None of the occupants of either vehicle was injured, but tho right side of Smith's car was badly damaged, and the car driven by Buckley was also slightly damaged.

Personal

Miss W. Peacock, v ho has resigned from the staff of the Southbrook School because of her approaching marriage, was presented with a seagrass chair by the pupils. Mr D. W. L. Mehrtens, chairman of the school committee, made the presentation.

NORTH CANTERBURY SUBUNION RESULTS

In a very close match at Woodend on Saturday the North Canterbury Club CRangiora) beat Woodend by 6 noints to 3 to retain its one-point r-ad in the senior grade of the North Canterbury Rugby Football Sub-Union's competitions. Kowai's vin against Glenmark put the Sefton team into second place, with Woodend next. The position of the senior teams is now as follows:—North Canterbury 84 points. Kowai 7| points. Woodend 6i points, Cust 5 points, Glenmark 4 points. Oxford 3 points, Amberley 1£ ->oints.
