The Labour Department proceeded against Arthur E. Wright, a butcher (Mr W. R. Lascellos), for failing to pay overtime rates when due to Colin Goring and George Robertson. A penalty of £1 was imposed. The Department also proceeded against Wright for failing to grant Robertson one week's annual holiday at the end of a year's service, or pay one week's wages instead. Mr Lascelles said that the worker had been allowed two weeks at the end of two years. The Magistrate dismissed the vzsc, stating that it should hav; been brought against the employee instead of the employer. THREE PENALTIES

Three penalties of 10s eacn were allowed against James Mayo, a shingle contractor, on information brought by the Labour Department. The complaints were that Mayo had employed C. Cress as a labourer at 15s a day instead of the a\ ard rate. Mvat no similarly employed Harry Rapley at 16s a day instead of the award rate. and that ho tailed to pay wages at weekly intervals. AWARD RATES NOT PAID

A penalty of 10s was imoosed on Thomas Harrall. licensee of the Royal George Hotel (Mr R. Twyneham), for failing to pay Jessie Nicholl the award rates for a general, on information brought by the Labour Department.
