WOMEN'S INSTITUTES

OMill I

The July meeting of the Omihi Women's Institute was held, with Mrs D. Little presiding. After the business, the grandmothers of the district entertained with talks and competitions. Much amusement was caused by a bran-tub, out of which every member present received a parcel. The competitions resulted:—Banana cake: Miss A. Symonds 1, Mrs J. Harris 2. Sugar-bag cushion: Mrs L. Russell 1, Miss D. Sloss 2. SnapshotsScenery: Mrs D. Little 1, Miss A. Symonds 2. Child study: M,iss P. Munro 1, Miss A. Symonds 2. Animal study: Miss A. Symonds 1, Mrs L. Russell 2. Hostesses for the afternoon were Mesdames J. Wyllie. J. L. and G. Russell, and Miss R. Symonds.

SOUTHBRIDGE

About 160 women, including representatives from neighbouring institutes and the "Women's Division of the Farmers' Union, attended the sixth birthday party of the Southbridge Women's Institute, held at the Town Hall. Mrs R. F. Pilkington welcomed the visitors. Mrs W. Deans, the Dominion president, -who gave an interesting address, was presented with a bouquet. Shoulder bouquets and floral sprays were presented to the principal officers.

A word-building competition was won by Mrs Anderson, and a birthday cake made by Mrs Goulden and iced by Mrs Bennett, was cut by two past presidents, Mesdames H. J. Greenwood and G. B. Couch. Several items were given. Afternoon tea was provided.

HORNBY

The monthly meeting of the Hornby Women's Institute was held in the Parish Hall, Hornby. Mrs Hepburn presided. The institute's fifth birthday party will be held in the first week in August, it was decided. The meeting agreed to call a general meeting to decide whether the institute should still carry on. Winners of the home competitions were:—Thrift article from something old: Mrs Wellsmore 1, Mrs Davis, sen., 2 and 3. Jar cf marmalade: Mrs Hepburn 1, Mrs Wellsmore 2.

Hostesses for the afternoon tea were .Mesdames Lawson, Thomson, tind Fuller.
