URGENT MATERNITY SERVICES
POSSIBILITY OP INTERIM REPORT
The possibility of almost immediate action being taken by the Government to deal with maternity services was indicated in an interview yesterday by the chairman of the committee inquiring into the maternity services of the Dominion, Dr. D. G. McMillan, M.P. He said that it was evident that the need in some cases was so urgent that the committee was giving serious consideration to a proposal to issue an interim report, so that the Government coald take action without delay.
The members of the committee returned to the city on Thursday after a tour of the West Coast centres, to hear additional evidence in Christchurch. Yesterday evidence was taken on general obstetrics and also on sites for a new St. Helens Maternity Hospital, which will be built in the city. The chairman said that it might be three months before the committee was in a position to present its full report. A big area of the Dominion has still to be' covered. The proceedings are being taken in camera.
