WARD CLOSED AT AUCKLAND
UUIKSd i.3;IOCUTIOM ULECiRAM.) AUCKLAND. July 2. There has been an outbreak of diphtheria in ward 28 at Auckland Hospital, and it has been found necessary to close the ward. It will remain closed until it is regarded us all clear from any possible infection. The first knowledge of the presence of the complaint in the ward was gained when a nurse complained of a sore throat. Her throat was immediately swabbed, and revealed a positive case of diphtheria. The nurse was immediately removed from the ward—the women's general medical ward — and was placed in isolation. The medical superintendent, Dr. J. W. Craven, said that in accordance with the usual custom all the nurses and patients in the ward were immediately swabbed, and the ward closed. As a result of the swabbing it was revealed that another nurse showed positive symptcms. and she was removed to the isolation block. Routine swabbing was carried out. and on each of the second and third occasions a patient returned positive symptoms. Both were immediately isolated. Dr. Craven added that all the cases were very mild, and every precaution was being observed.
