NO. 3 LICENSING AUTHORITY •
SITTING AT WESTPORT
Mr T. H. Langford presided at a sitting of No. 3 Transport Licensing Authority, held at Westport yesterday. Mr E. S. Brittenden represented the Railway Department, and Mr W. Craddock the Buller Transport Alliance. Applications were dealt with as follows:
Goods Service Amendments: W. Boyd applied for two vehicle authorities for Public Works and local body cartage, and the right to operate in and about of Dennistou and Burnett's Face weekly, in conjunction with his route licence.—Granted in respect to one vehicle, in the first case, and wholly in th-* second.
Gibbs Transport, Ltd.. one additional vehicle authority in terms of present licence.—Granted. A. Hockett and Sons, one additional vehicle authority in terms of present licence.—Granted.
J. Queripel was granted an additional vehicle authority and an extension to carry motor spirit from Westport, also pernvssion to carry coal and general goods within a five-mile radius of Waimangaroa; also to cart Public Works Department and local body material. The applications of C. C. Perkins and T. V. Southon were held over, the chairman desiring more information in respect to the former, and reserving his decision in the case of Southon, who applied for an extension of his three-mile radius from Inangahua Junction. New Applications—E. Upham was granted one vehicle authority fivemile radius of Westport, for coal and general goods. J. F. McDonald was granted one vehicle authority, seven-mile radius of Ngakawau for carrying of material for Stockton Coal Company. G. Hawkins and N. O'Dea were granted permission to carry coal and coke to Nelson and back load with fruit and vegetables, on one vehicle authority W. H. Gourley, J. J. Chapman, E. A.Humphries, and L. W. Griffiths were granted licences to carry Public Works and local body material within the Buller County. Mr Langford issued a warning to men applying for work on Public Works for vehicles that, before doing so, they must apply for a licence, 'ine authority would not deal with any further cases from persons who had taken on Public Works Department contracts in the hope that they would in time secure a licence. The licence would have to be issued before the vehicle was used.
DRAMA FESTIVAL AT HOKITIKA
There was a large attendance at the Princess Theatre, Hokitika, when a drama festival was held under the auspices of the Women's Institute. Six plays were presented. The Runanga branch of the Workers' Education* i\ssociation, which presented "World Without Men," was awarded first place. The characters were: Millett, Mrs J. Smith; Miss Whisper, Miss D. Cannell; Madame Pravel, Mrs Braithwaite; Mrs Smith, Mrs B. Smith; Mrs Robinson. Mrs R. Spiers; Mrs Brown, Miss N. Stare.
The Hokitika branch of the Workers' Educational Association was second, with "Comedy of Manners." Those taking part were Mrs L. Michel (Orpington), Mrs A. Stevenson (Jane). Mrs R. G. Millen (Lady Titherington), Mrs A. Carr (Mrs Caraway), Mrs A. Perry (Madam Rossignol). Other competitors were:—Hokitika Women's Institute ("The Pacifist"), Woodstock Women's Institute ("The Photographer"), Runanga Women's Institute ("Mechanical Jane"), Ross Women's Institute ("March Wedding"). The judge was Mr R. T. Bush, of Greymouth.
GREYMOUTH PERSONAL NOTES
MrD. R Lloyd, of the staff of the Magistrate's Court, Greymouth, has been appointed Probation Officer for the district
Mr F. W. Manttan, of the staff of the Telegraph Office, Greymouth, will leave on Tuesday on transfer to Wellington. Mr G. Roberts, of the clerical staff of the Public Works Department, Greymouth, who has been appointed to the Royal Air Force for training, was presented with a razor set by the staff of the Public Works Department at a recent gathering.
HOCKEY MATCHES IN BULLER
Hockey matches played in the Buller district on Thursday resulted as follows:—Ladies' section: Rivals 2, beat Ramblers 1, on Victoria square. Westport 2, beat Kiwi 1, at Stockton. Ramblers suffered their first defeat of the season, the newly-formed club winning after a great game. Men's section:—Wesley 3, beat Rovers 0; Athletic 2, beat Westp'ort 1. Both games were played on Victoria square.
