BULLER PROGRESS

ROAD IMPROVEMENTS SUGGESTED

TRADE WITH REEFTON

The Westport Borough Council at its meeting on Wednesday evening decided, on the motion of Crs. N. O'Dea and C. H. Thomas, to ask the Main Highways Board to have the Buller Gorge road from Westport to Inangahua macadamised and widened. Cr. O'Dea said that with the new Lewis Pass road placing greater and much more convenient travelling facilities in the way of the tourist, it was expected that a greater influx of tourists to the Buller would result. Accordingly a much improved inlet to the town of Westport would be greatly appreciated by all concerned. Apart from the above factor, continued Cr. O'Dea, it must be realised that about 100 men would be put off the Buller railway in a few months, and the Government would have to place them on other useful works such as the one proposed. A suggestion also made by Cr. O Dea that the Borough and County Councils, Buller Progress League, and Farmers Union representatives, should visit Reefton occasionally and confer with representatives of Inangahua local bodies on trade matters, also received general support He said that the Westport harbour was the logical outlet for Reefton products, and as the two districts had a lot in common, occasional conferences would do much good.

POSSIBLE EROSION AT RACECOURSE

NEED FOR PLANTING TREES EMPHASISED

The need for planting trees on the club's property to guard against possible erosion which might be caused by the erection of the protection works at Coal Creek was emphasised by Mr T. E. Coates, chairman, at a meeting of the committee of the Greymouth Jcckey Club yesterday. It was decided that the course committee should visit the racecourse on Sunday to see what steps should be taken.

1 The opinion that the traffic insoectors were a menace on race days through stopping motor-cars for licences, thus causing traffic jams, was expressed by Mr A. Beban, commenting on a letter from the Commissioner of Transport about difficulty in dealing with traffic on race days. The commissioner said that the Department would be pleased to arrange for traffic inspectors to assist any clubs which had difficulty in dealing with traffic on race days. It was decided that a reply should be sent, stating that the inspectors had caused traffic jams at Greymouth through their action in stopping motor-cars, and that the delegate should take the matter up at the meeting of the New Zealand Racing Conference.

The secretary. Mr M. J. Fogarty, reported that the club had made a profit of £135 8s lid on its winter meeting, compared with a loss of £l7 15s on the last winter meeting held in 1934.

District Committee A protest against the South Canterbury Jockey Club holding its meeting on the same date as that set aside for Reefton was made by the Reefton Jockey Club in a letter received by the Greymouth District Committee at a meeting yesterday. Mr T. E. Coates presided. The Reefton Club said that the letter forwarded was a copy of one sent to the South Canterbury Club. The meeting was agreed that the committee's delegate to the New Zealand Racing Conference should attend to the protest
