OPAWA PUBLIC LIBRARY

A SUCCESSFUL YEAR FIRST ANNUAL MEETING HELD The Mayor, Mr J. W. Beanland, who presided at the first annual meeting of the Opawa Public Library, held last night, said that the library's first year seemed to have been a most successful one. The district was fortunate in having such a fine building. "I see that you have a fair number of books on your shelves, and all these books are new —new books are what the public wants. It is better to have fewer«new books on the shelves than to have a large number of books perhaps 20 years old that are never taken out," Mr Beanland said. The annual report showed that the year had been a most successful one, th« number of subscribers having increased from 98 at the opening duy to 391 at present. Books, too, had increased in number from 878 to 1937. The balance-sheet showed the library to be in a healthy state financially, there being a credit balance of £6 13s 3d, and an excess of assets over liabilities of £368 10s. The Deputy-Mayor, Mr E. H. Andrews, said that it haH Heen suggested 'hat the council should supply- the libraries with electric light, but thai the council had decided that it would be dangerous to create a precedent. "Some people say that the council's library grant is too small, but these people forget to state that the council provides the buildings and does the majority of the repairs. The couu-

, cil is deeply interested in the libraries, and I congratulate you on your report and balance-sheet." "Your empty shelves show how much remains to be done," said Mr J. K. Archer. If the libraries were to benelit. Mr Archer was sure that citizens would not mind a small library rate. The speaker hoped that soon the public library would be owned-and run by the city. Mr T. H Butterfield urged the library committee to keep its building in its new condition by making any necessary repairs without delay. A vote of thanks to the press closed the meeting. ~ , The election of officers resulted:— Patron, the Mayor, Mr J. W. Beanland; president, Mr F. H. Dephoff: vice-presidents, Mr A. W. Minson, Mr W. S.
