WOMEN'S INSTITUTES

♦ OHOKA Mrs W. Richards presided at the April meeting of the Ohoka Women s Institute held in the public hall. There was a good attendance. A link letter from Harray, Orkney, Scotland, was read by Miss J. Fairman. Mrs G. Ward demonstrated the making of wood fibre flowers and wool rugs, and several finished articles were displayed. The best bloom competition was for a pink pocket chrysanthemum grown from cuttings distributed last year by Mrs J. Ward. In presenting the prize, Mrs Ward expressed regret that there were not more blooms for exhibition. Competitions results were: Best bloom, Mrs Palmer 1, Mrs Maynard 2, Mrs E. Sanders 3; vase of flowers, Mrs Richards 1, Mrs Cottle 2, Mrs W. Martyn 3; paper mosaic article, Miss Richards 1, Mrs Richards 2, Miss Duff 3. Mrs J. Ward was nominated for the office of group convener. Afternoon tea was served by Mesdames Cottle, Candy, Dally, and Miss J. Clist. MOUNT PLEASANT The monthly meeting of the Mount Pleasant Women's Institute was held at Mrs Edgar's home, "Hillview," with Mrs Morten presiding. Mesdames C. Burgess, N. Forrest, and Miss Townsend were welcomed as new members. Motions of sympathy were passed with Mesdames Edmonds and Walker. Mrs C. Burgess spoke on the "Oxford Group," and a vote of thanks was accorded the speaker. Mrs Woods also spoke. The roll-call, "A Thing of Beauty," was well responded to, and a fine display of hill-grown flowers was much admired. Competition winners wore: Best bowl of flowers, Mrs Woodford, and best vase of flowers, Mrs Hughes. Hostesses for the afternoon were Mesdames Edgar, G. A. K. Williams, W. E. S. Furby, Cossar, and Miss Hood Williams. KAIKOURA The monthly meeting of the Kaikoura branch of the Women's Institute was held, with Mrs N. R. Comer (president) presiding. Recreation competitions resulted in a tie for first place by Mrs J. J. Gibson and Mrs E. Sharplin. Other competitions resulted: —Flowers, Mrs A. S. Robinson 1, Mrs J. A. Johnston and Mrs R. L. Withers (equal) 2; sewing, Mrs R. L. Withers 1. Mrs W. A. Ferrv 2; cooking. Mrs H. Storor 1, Mrs W. A. Ferry 2. Mrs R. L. Withers Rave an interesting tafk an hospital laboratory work. The hostesses were Mesdames H. A. Fairweather, W. A. Ferry. E. Firkin, W. A. Hopkins, F. Hobbs, P. Foster, and Miss Mary Mackle. HAPUKU The monthly meeting of the Hapuka branch of the Women's Institute was held recently, with Mrs P. J. Boyd (president) presiding. Mrs J. D. Boyd gave an interesting demonstration on tape work. The competitions resulted: Best chrysanthemum. Mrs N. Mason 1, Mrs P. J. Bnvd 2: articles made from used material. Mrs W. A. Hopkins 1. Mrs W. Wilson 2: ginser nuts. Mrs J. D. Bovd and Miss Greta Smith (equal) 1, Mrs W. Vaughan 3. SPRINGSTON SOUTH The June meeting of the Springston South Women's Institute was hel-1 recent'v. Mrs P. V. Bailey presided. Four new members * were elected. An interesting and entertaining afternoon was provided by the gold group. A demonstration en rag-mat making was given by Mrs J. Easterbrook, of Prebbleton. Items were given by Mrs H. A. Fletcher. Master Jack Hamilton, and Miss Cynthia Fletcher. Competitions resulted as follows:—Best bloom in the garden, Mrs W. Wright 1, Miss Robertson 2, Mrs H. Hamilton 3; a plate of shortbread, Mrs P. V. Bailey 1, Mrs T. Greaves 2, Mrs H. Hamilton and Mrs W. Mounce (equal) 3; best summer nightdress, Mrs W. Wright 1, Mrs H. Hamilton 2, Mrs Ellmers 3.
