The chairman, the Rev. G. W. Hercus,t presided at the monthly meeting of the Kalapoi Borough School Committee. > ~,.., The headmaster reported that the present roll number was 306. During the month the school had been visited by two inspectors and the school medical nurses. As the children of the school were not receiving a free supply of milk it was the intention of the School Medical Department to make it a control school for comparison with those schools that are receiving the supply. Four seats for outside use and six.new desks had been received from the Education Board and 28 dozen plants had been placed in the school grounds. The report was adopted. An application was received from the Canterbury Young Women's Baptist Bible Class Union for permission to school fpr the Easter Camp, in 1938. The application was granted. The secretary of the Canterbury Education Board wrote advising that a grant had been approved to meet the
cost of painting the school and that the work would be proceeded with. The resignation of Miss M. Macdonald as assistant-mistress was received and Miss P. Haylock (Taumarunui) was recommended by the board for the position. It was decided to draw the Education Board's attention again to the need for an additional male teacher at the school and to ask if the matter could be given consideration in making the present appointment. ■■-... The chairman reported that it had been suggested that trees be planted in the school grounds to commemorate the Coronation. It was decided that an oak tree be planted to mark the occasion, and that arrangements .be made for silver birch trees to be planted along the school frontage in Hilton street, A,. sub-committee comprising the chairman,; Mr Tourell. and the headmaster, was appointed to procure the trees.'--' It was decided that Mr W. A. Banks, North Canterbury representative on the Education Board, be asked to address the children on Coronation Day. and in the event.of Mr Bankd being unable to attend, that the chairman deliver the address. The resignations of Messrs W. Hart and E. Erickson as members of the committee, were received, and the chairman reported that arrangements were being made to fill the vacancies.
