REARMAMENT PLAN PRAISED

RETIRED ADMIRAL'S VIEW OF BRITAIN'S DEFENCES

"The weakness of the British Government, especially in the last lew years, resulted in an appreciable loss of prestige to the country," said Engineer Rear-Admiral E. D. Sydenham, a visitor to the city, in an interview yesterday. Admiral Sydenham who was discussing rearmament, said the knowledge that the British Government had now at last realised that the best way to keep off war was to have strong defences was pleasing to any naval man, .. _. Admiral Sydenham, who retired from the Royal Navy in 1931, divides his time between residence in England and New Zealand, and travelling between the two countries. He had a special interest last week in following the fortunes of H.M.S. Hood in her work of protecting British merchant shipping off the Spanish coast, because when the vessel was being built he watched the construction work on behalf of the Admiralty. After the vessel was launched he served on her for two years.
