CANTERBURY MARKETS

POTATO PRICES HARDEN . (bt ottb commebciax. editor.) Tuesday Evening. The grain and produce markets continue quiet, but with fair business in wheat and potatoes. Wheat for feed purposes is in excellent demand, and the release of milling grade for fowl feeding has apparently made little difference to tho trade. Milling wneat continues to be delivered, and is being taken steadily by the mills. It now appears that exports of potatoes are to be made to South America soon, and the price has in consequence hardened. May-June potatoes are worth up to £4 10s a ton, and prompts about £4. There is an excellent demand for barley for fowl feeding, and the price is about 4s 6d on trucks. Chaff .remains firm. Cutting is less than usual because oats offer better returns to the farmer, and also, there appears to be little of good bright quality about. The small seeds market is dull. Offerings of Akaroa cocksfoot are still heavy, but merchants show small disposition to buy even at the low prices farmers are willing, to, accept. Other lines remain firm at unchanged prices. Quotations The following are the prices quoted to farmers, on trucks, at country sidings, unless otherwise indicated;— Wheat—Milling, April, f.0.b., Tuscan 5s Id, Hunters 5s 3d, Pearl 5s sd. Pollard—Large £6 5s a ton, small £6 15s. AUCKLAND [THE PRESS Special Service.] AUCKLAND, April 20. The chief features of the local grain and produce markets since, the last report have been a. firming in chaff, and an increasing interest in southern potatoes. At present there are three chief sources of potato supply to this market. The cheapest come from Pukekohe and, being freely offered, command £6 10s a ton through stores. For some time Manawatu potatoes have had marked preference on the score of quality, but these are now being displaced by South Island importations, which are quoted at £7 15s, Stocks of Manawatu still on hand command £8 ss. Onions from Pukekohe sell steadily, but not briskly, at 10s per cwt. Pollard in Australia has been firmly held in recent weeks, and local dealers are charging from £9 5s to £9' 10s. according, to quantities. Even at this high price a brisk demand is reported. Local mills have .limited supplies at much lower rates. Bran is steady at £6 15s 9d a ton. Fowl prices are unchanged, and Australian is selling at about 7s 3d a bushel. The maize market continues firm, with imported lines commanding from 7s" 2d to 7s 3d a bushel, B Carton oats are still selling at 4s lid a bushel, but chaff has firmed and merchants are now asking £lO a ton.
