YOUNG PLAYER BEATS CRAWFORD

AUSTRALIAN TENNIS CHAMPIONSHIPS

BROMWICH AND M'GKATH TO

MEET IN FINAL

(Received January 28, 11.30 p.m.)

SYDNEY, January 28.

In the semi-finals of the Australian tennis championships the following were results:— Men's Singles—Bromwich beat Crawford 6-1, 7-9, 6-4, 8-6; McGrath beat Hopman, 6-4, 6-1, 7-5. In a spectacular match lasting two and a quarter hours, the young player Bromwich triumphed over the Davis Cup player Crawford, owing to consistency and better condition. Crawford was extremely tired at the finish.

Bromwich displayed a unique fighting spirit and had the crowd on tiptoes. He serves right-handed and drives left-handed, and uses a double-handed grip on the right side. The meeting of the two youngsters, McGrath and Bromwich, in %\ie final on Saturday is awaited with great interest. McGrath found Hopman much below his form of yesterday, when Hopman beat Quist.

In the semi-finals of the women's doubles, Misses T. Coyne and .N. Wynne beat Misses V. Sehvin and A. Hattersley, 6-3, 4-6, 6-3. Mesdames Hopman and Westacott beat Misses J. Hartigan and M. Blick, 6-4, 6-3.
