ATHLETICS

EVENING MEETINGS CANCELLED

CANTERBURY CENTRE'S DECISION A decision to discontinue the Tuesday night athletic meetings for the rest of the season was made by a meeting of club secretaries and captains recently, reported Mr E. M. Todd at the meeting of the Canterbury Centre of the New Zealand Amateur Athletic Association last evening. It was also decided, said Mr Todd, not to attempt any grouping of competitors at inter-club meetings this season; but it was recommended that during the winter an attempt be made to remodel both Tuesday night meetings and the inter-club meetings. In answer to an enquiry from the centre the New Zealand Council wrote stating that there was no livelihood of the New Zealand championships being postponed. The Wellington Centre having expressed an unwillingness to send down a team to compete against Canterbury on January 6 on account of the paralysis epidemic, it was resolved to get in touch with Wellington and urge them to come on that date as the health authorities were of opinion that there was no danger. In the event of the date proving unsuitable they were to be asked to suggest an alternative date. I i

In reference to certain remarks made by Mr J. K. Moloney at a recent meeting of the centre, the New Zealand Council wrote stating that the centre was under an obligation to conduct its meetings in a proper manner and asking that in future the centre should endeavour to see that such unwarranted reflections on the national controlling body were not made.

Messrs R. Beattie and J. K. Moloney were authorised to compile an official history of the Canterbury Centre to be incorporated in the history of New Zealand athletics to be written for the jubilee of the formation of the Amateur Athletic Association of New Zealand to be celebrated at the beginning of the 1937-38 season.

A committee comprising Messrs E. M. Todd, R. Beattie, and J. Johnston was set up to consider the advisability of having the visiting Japanese athletes competing at an evening meeting. The Hinds Athletic Club wrote asking for the centre's approval for the annual athletic meeting to be held on April 17. Approval was granted. On the motion of the chairman, Mr Todd, it was decided to write to the South Canterbury sub-centre saying that unless they affiliated certain clubs and pay arrears of affiliation fees, South Canterbury athletes would be debarred from competing in the Canterbury championships.

NEW BRIGHTON CLUB

SUCCESSFUL EVENING MEETING There were Rood entries for a meeting held by the New Brighton Amateur Athletic Club in ideal conditions at the Rawhiti Sports Club last evening. The grounds arid track, which have received a great deal of attention from the Rawhiti Domain Board, lately, were much improved, and there was a larger attendance of spectators than usual. All of the events were keenly contested, and the men's half-mile championship was undoubtedly the best race of the season. At the beginning of the last lap, A. G. Donohue held a 10 yards lead from H. Cook, and retained this until 12 yards from the finish, when Cook beat him by the narrowest margin in a strong sprint. A. Wayman was a very close third. In the youths' half-mile, B. Bodger, with a handicap of 45 yards, maintained a 20 yards lead until the bend to the final straight, when L, Hay and D. Gibson, running together, finished well in their bid for the lead. Hay finished only four yards ahead of Gibson. In all heats of the youths' long jump Gibson's performance was exceptional. The club excluded all children's events from the programme. The results were as follows: Men's 150 Yards Hurdles—T. Wilhelm (Byds) 1, A. Buckley (7yds) 2, A. H. Wayman (6yds) 3. Time, 18 2-ssec. Women's 100 Yards—R. Power (6yds) 1, S. Cooper (scr) 2, E.
