FALSE REPRESENTATIONS

Joseph Henry Barron, who, said Chief-Detective W. H. Dunlop, had-35 previous convictions and practically every one of them concerned wiuToW taining goods and credit by fraud, pleaded guilty to four charges or obtaining meat by false pretences. Toe total sum involved was £1 6s. He had styled himself "Murray" and had told the complainants that he was employed by the City Council at the destructor. Dr. A. L. Haslam, who appeared for . Barron, said that accused's wife had made restitution to one man, but that there was still 9s 3d to be paid. This would be refunded very soon. Chief-Detective Dunlop said that if temptation was put In the way of Barron he just could not resist it. Barron was convicted and ordered to come up for sentence within two years if called on the three charges, a condition being that he should stay doing work in the country during?* that time. He was also ordered to make restitution of the 9s 3d out« standing. On the fourth he was convicted and discharged.

REMANDS GRANTED

A remand until March '25 was granted in the case of Ernest John McDonald, who was charged with failing to comply with the terms of his release on probation. John Houston King (Mr A. A. McLachlan) was remanded to appear an February 1 on a charge of stealing tools of a total value of £8 Os 6d, the property of Hugh Thompson Cameron. Bail was allowed at £25 with cm surety of £25, with the further condition that King should report t> the police daily. Norman Williams was remanded to appear at Wellington on February 4 on a charge of stealing £3O in money from Edwin Young. John Francis Magneil, aged 52 years, pleaded guilty to stealing a suit of clothes and a shirt, of a total value of £6 ss, the property of Kenneth George Brown. Chief-Detective W. H. Dunlop said that further enquiries were to be made, and asked that ha should be remanded for sentence unfiL February 4. He was remanded ac* cordingly.

DRUNKENNESS CHARGE

Anthony Shannon, for a fourflll offence of drunkenness within aixl months, was sentenced to three months imprisonment

SUNDAY TRADING

Arthur Henry Lawrence was convicted and fined £2 for Sunday trading.

FOUND ON PREMISES

r John Cleverly Turner was convicted and ordered to come up for sentence 1 if called upon within 12 months for | being unlawfully on premises occupied by Thomas Grimby at 24 Jubile* street. Mr W. F. Tracy appeared for | the accused.

ON LICENSED PREMISES

For being on the licensed premises of the Phoenix Hotel after hours, Noel Cook was convicted and fined 10s, and Jack Poison was convicted and fined 20s. Alfred Henry Leith (Mr C. 5. Thomas) was charged with being on the licensed premises of the Oxford Hotel after hours, and with aiding and abetting in the sale of liquor after hours. The first charge was later withdrawn, and on the second Leitn was fined 20s and ordered to pay cost*.
