WELLINGTON, January 28,

The Dominion Observatory's weather forecast for Canterbury and Marlborough, issued at 5 p.m., and dealing with the 24 hours following the time of issue, is as follows:

Moderate but freshening northeast to northerly winds, turning to southerlies during Friday. Weather fine and warm at first, but becoming cool and cloudy, with the southerly change, and scattered showers probable. Seas slight to moderate, but rising north of Kaikoura,

The following is the Dominion forecast:—

Weather cloudy to overcast in the Auckland province, and rain developing, with some heavy falls. Elsewhere fine'at first, but rain gradually extending southwards, and scattered falls developing also in western and southern portions of the South Island. Temperatures warm. An anti-cyclone is centred east of the North Island, while another is advancing on to southeastern Australia. A tropical cyclone of only moderate depth, moving southwards, was centred at 3 p.m. about 150 miles east of Norfolk Island. A shallow depression • is advancing also across the Tasman Sea.

Winds—North-east to northerly, moderate to strong north of Kawhia and East Cape, and reaching gale force in many places. Elsewhere light to moderate, but freshening, a change to southerlies extending over the southern half of the South Island to-morrow. Seas (New Zealand waters)— Becoming rough north of East Cape; elsewhere slight to moderate, but rising in the Cook Strait and Foveaux Strait areas. Eastern Tasman—Moderate to strong northerly winds, but a change to southerlies advancing from the west. seas moderate to rather rough.

CHRISTCHURCH WEATHER

The weather in Christchurch yesterday was cloudy and warm, with a" fresh easterly wind. The maximum temperature was 66.8 degrees.

Auckland—There was a fresh northeasterly wind yesterday, and the sky was overcast. The weather was warm, and rain threatened, although the barometer fell only slightly to 30.00 inches. Wellington—Yesterday was another brilliantly fine day, with a higher.temperature than that of Wednesday and a moderate northerly wind. The minimum temperature on Wednesday night was 47.4 degrees; the maximum yesterday was 72 degrees. Dunedin—The weather yesterday was warm, with a slight breeze from the north-east. The maximum temperature was 70 degrees, and the barometer fell from 30.00 in to 29.80 in.
