ANNEXING LAND FROM THE AIR
DOUBTFUL . CLAIMS IN THE ANTARCTIC (PBESS ASSOCIATION TZI.EGBAII.) AUCKLAND, January 15. The .introduction of aircraft to AntBctic exploration was- mentioned in a paper by Mr, C. E. Collins, pf Wel- . Ymgtcn. read before the Australian and New Zealand Association for the Advancement of Science to-day. "The use of aircraft further complicates the position of territorial claims," faid Mr Collins.. -Rear-Admiral Byrd's two expeditions discovered from the air new areas of land which he claimed for the United States of America. So far it is gathered that no official action Jiad been taken by Congress to ratify these claims, but if the question arises "is open to grave doubt whether the mere act of flying over land creates a sound claim when, according to the fisting interpretation of international «w on the point, the act "of formal annexation of land itself is insufficient alone-to confer a valid title."
