LIGHTING ON SHIPS

PROVISION FOR EMERGENCIES

Electric power on board ship is one of those extras which is now taken for granted by passengers and crew alike and, as with other luxuries of modern life both ashore and afloat, its value is only realised when the power fails (states an article in the Journal of Commerce, Shipbuilding and Engineering Edition), inis state of affairs may be anticipated soonei or later with all electrical power schemes, even the British national grid system, with all its reserve of power generators and inter-connected stations, is not immune. When these failures occur during daylight and under fair weather conditions at sea, a little inconvenience, particularly in the machinery spaces, is inevitable, as well as in other parts of the ship where artificial light is essential. When any such failure takes place under other conditions the effect is Invariably much more serious, and despite the care which has been lavished on equipment for the safety of life at sea, very little has been provided for an emergency such as that indicated. The provision of the emergency lighting set placed above the margin deck is, ol course, the official recognition of the necessity for an alternative source ot power in the event of the complete failure of the main generators clue to submersion or some other cause. To get this set in operation, however, means time, and the alternative, particularly for the machinery spaces and a few scattered lights in key positions, is a separate source of supply, operated by batteries which might be continuously in operation and not be left until some emergency calls. A further safeguard which would ensure a measure of confidence, particularly in the crossChannel and short sea services, is 1 provision of emergency flashlight torches in cabins, which could be stowed and treated much as the customary lifebelt. In the liner Awatea, recently added to the fleet of the Union Steam Ship Company, of New Zealand, a special emergency electrical generating set sucli as that indicated is provided, backed by a 220-volt 64-ampere hour battery. Another ship of this fleet, the Matua, has a 24-volt generating set and a 96-ampere hour battery to provide power in emergency, and wired for use in the machinery spaces. The provision of battery power in these ships shows that its value is appreciated, but it is doubtful whether sufficient use is made, in general, of the possibilities that exist in the chemical storage of electrical energy for use in emergency afloat.
