WELLINGTON, January 15. The Dominion Observatory's weather forecast for Canterbury and Marlborough issued at 5 p.m., and dealing with the 24 hours following the time of issue, is as follows: —

Moderate but freshening: northcast to south-east winds. Weather unsettled, dull, and misty. Rain probable; seas moderate but rising.

The following is the Dominion forecast;—

Nelson and Marlborough northwards, with widespread rain. Many , heavy falls and considerable floodins- likely, more especially in northem, central, and eastern districts of the North Island. Eain extending also to eastern areas of the South Island; but weather mainly fair in the west and the far south. The northern cyclone has become more intense and extensive, and now is centred east of Cape Maria van Diemen. A slight anti-cyclone

is located east of the South island. Winds—Easterly, later changing to southerlies north of New Plymouth and Napier, and -outh-easterlies thence southwards ( o Farewell Spit and Kaikoura; winds strong to gale, and reaching strong gale force m places; variable south of Farewell Spit and Kaikoura, but north-easterlies to south-easterlies predominating, moderate mainly, but increasing on parts of the east coast. Seas (New Zealand waters)— Rough to high north of Farewell Spit and Kaikoura. Elsewhere moderate, but rising south of Kaikoura. Eastern Tasman—Southerly winds, gales, and high seas in the northern and central portions; moderate to fresh with moderate to rather rough seas in the southern portion.

CHRISTCHURCH WEATHER

The weather in Christchurch yesterday was warm, although there was little sun, and there was a fresh breeze from the north-east. The maximum temperature was 62.4 degrees. The evening was cool and fairly clear. The barometer continued to fall during the day. At 1 o'clock this morning: the weather was cloudy, with an easterly breeze. The temperature was 57 degrees. IN OTHER PLACES

Auckland—The south-easterly gale which raged in Auckland on Thursday abated yesterday morning. The wind was still strong; but the rain ceased. Temperatures were warm. The barometer became steady at 29.50 inches. Wellington—The; weather was' dull and threatening all' day. There was a slight trace of rain before 9 a.m., and rain set in steadily later in the afternoon. A moderate to fresh' southerly wind blew. The minimum temI perature on Thursday night was 52.1 I degrees; the maximum' yesterday was 1 63 degrees, and at 3.30 p.m. the temI perature was 59.7 degrees. j Dunedin—There was again a fresh 'north-east breeze yesterday, but the sun shone brightly and the weather generally was pleasant.
