ELIMINATING PRESENT RAIL STAGES (BRITISH OFFICIAL WIBELESo.) RUGBY, January 14. An experiment designed to eliminate the long train journeys across Europe for passengers by the Empire air services was completed successfully yesterday, when the Imperial Airways flying-boat Centaurus arrived at Southampton, The Centaurus left Alexandria on Tuesday morning with eight passengers and a ton of mail. After a night at Brindisi the machine trayelled on to Southampton with only one halt for refuelling at Marseilles. The 800 miles to Marseilles was covered at an average speed of 170 miles an hour. . The new service will not be introduced on a regular basis until a sufficient number of Empire flying-boats has been delivered.
