LIFE SAVING

NEW BRIGHTON CLUB RECOGNITION OF BOY’S BRAVERY The club captain (Mr A. T. F. Stokes) presided over a full' attendance at a meeting of the committee of the New Brighton Surf Bathing and Life Saving Club, held in the pavilion. The president (Mr L. C. Matson) and the four vicepresidents were present. The treasurer (Mr P. R. Smith) reported that the public was responding generously to the appeal made by the club for support for the building fund, and the tickets for the club’s art union were selling well. It was gratifying for the club that the public showed appreciation of its work. A contribution of £1 Is towards the building fund was received from a member of the club. The chairman reported that Mr A M. Chivers had offered a prize of £1 Is to the person selling the most tickets in the club's art union. Seven new members were elected. Mr H. Throp commented upon the plucky action of a junior member of the club, Colin Hurrell. who rescued his brother from drowning in the Avon river on December 30. and suggested that some recognition of his bravery should be made by the club. It was agreed that a letter of congratulation upon his heroic deed be sent to the boy, and that his action be placed on the club records. Arrangements were made to hold a test for the New Zealand Surf Association’s surf award on the beach on Sunday, at 10.30 a.m.. and for the competition for the Owles Cup. a five-man club alarm event to be held in the afternoon at 2.30. The club instructor (Mr E. AnsLey) reported that the teams were practising for the first Inter-club competitions to be held at Waimairi beach on Sunday, January 24. The competitions to be held arc the Ray Blank Cup (Canterbury sixman team championship), and the Sumner Cup, a four-man championship. It was resolved that if possible the club would enter a team in the New Zealand Surf Association's championships for the Nelson Shield and the William Henry memorial trophy to be held at Lyall Bay, Wellington, on Februay 13 and 14, and the arrangements were left in the hands of the emergency committee.
