THE WAR IN SPAIN
Reports from Spain state that attacks and counter attacks are still being made about Madrid. An air attack on the British Embassy at the end of last week has caused a good deal of trouble and argument, General Franco,' the leader of the insurgents, declaring that he had no aeroplanes in the air at the time; his suggestion was that the government leaders arranged the raid do induce Britain to, take sides against the insurgents. The British Government is still firmly trying to check volunteers going to Spain from any country. At the end of the week 25 Independent Labour party volunteers left London for Spain; but proposals have been drawn up by members of his Majesty’s Government to make it, illegal for any volunteers to leave England. These proposals have been suggested for other countries as well. The French Government has indicated its agreement and is reported to be\preparing to follow Britain’s .lead. Replies from other countries are awaited and in the meantime |loo more Independent Labour party volunteers are still in London waiting for instructions. While these provisions against intervention are being takep by the British Government the Soviet Union has made an appeal to the British fleet to take part with other nations in putting an end to the activities of General Franco’s warships in the Mediterranean.'
