AGREEMENT REACHED IN CONCILIATION

SOAP, TALLOW, AND CANDLE WORKERS* DISPUTE Agreement on all points except that of under-rate workers was reached in Conciliation Council yesterday in the Canterbury Soap, Tallow, and Candle Workers’ dispute. The commissioner, Mr S. Ritchie, presided, the employers’ assessors were Messrs D. I. Macdonald, W. H. Marsh, and C. Shepherd, and the employees’ assessors were Messrs H. G. Kilpatrick, W. Ingham, R. A. Ritchie, and E. Jones. The under-rate workers’ clause, was referred to the Arbitration, Court Wages were the chief point in dispute. and the following rates were agreed to: —Soap and candle workers, 2s 2Jd; tallow, boiling down, and manure workers, 2s O-Jd; workers on shifts to receive Id an hour extra. Rates for youths were agreed to on the basis of 17s 6d for the first six months, with rises of 5s for each six months thereafter, until the fourth year, when the rate will be 47s 6d, 55s for the fifth year, and thereafter the minimum rate for adult workers. Rates for females were agreed to at 15s for the first six months, with 4s rises for each succeeding six months, with 40s in the seventh six months and 45s thereafter. The hours for shift work were agreed to at eight, including crib time, which is not to exceed 30 minutes.
