MORE TOURISTS ON WEST COAST
INCREASED HOLIDAY TRAFFIC MANY VISITORS TO THE CrLACIERS Tourist traffic on the West Coast by railway, service car, and private car has been much heavier this year than last, according to those who cater for the needs of the travelling public. ■ One person said that the infantile paralysis epidemic, while curtailing travelling to a certain extent, also assisted it on the West Coast, as those who had ’ intended to go to Dunedin and Invercargill had to change their plans, and many came to the West Coast. One of the most popular places was the South Westland glaciers, and all means of transport there were heavily patronised. It is estimated that there were 100 motor-cars at the Waiho on one day during the holiday season. North Island people, in particular, were present in larger numbers than usual on the West Coast during the holidays. A feature of the holidays this year was that travelling began a week or 10 days before Christmas, instead of two or three days before, as has been usual in the last few years.
