TWO DIFFICULT CROSSINGS

CASS AND BRUCE CREEKS TO BE BRIDGED ROADMEN v/ILL KEEP l FORDS IN ORDER IN MEANTIME The Minister for Public Works, the Hon. R. Semple, has "agreed that a roadman should be placed at each of the Bruce creek and Cass creek crossings, on the road to Arthur's Pass to keep the fords in order for motorists. A request that this should be done was made to him yesterday by officials "of the Automobile Association and their suggestion met with an immediate approval ixom the-Minister. The men will be kept at the crossings probably until the bridges which have been authorised are constructed over both. During this motoring season many vehicles have been in trouble at each creek, and it was stated ■to the Minister that there had . been, a long series of complaints about the state of, the fords. The crossings were not difficult in them-, selves, but so many cars were using them that the creek-bed was stirred up to such an extent that vehicles coming late in the day were caught in the rutted shingle. „ „ „ _> Mr Semple gave Mr J. S. Hawkes (secretary of the Automobile Association), and Mr P. Harvey (secretary of the South Island Motor Union) a definite assurance that the creeks would be bridged and that m the meantime, arrangements would be made for the fords to be kept m order by roadmen stationed there.
