HANDICAP TOURNAMENT TO BE HELD A decision to hold a handicap tournament on the courts of the United. (Rangiora) and Rangiora Clubs, on January 23, January 30, and February 6 was made at a meeting of the executive of the North Canterbury Lawn Tennis Sub-Association on Monday evening. Entries will close on January 18 It was decided to postpone competition matches on the first two days of he tournament and to ask K. Hadley (Amberley Domain) and A. Cook (Amberley) to play a challenge m it°was agreed to close the intermediate competition on February 20. The secretary (Mr T. H. Blam) reported that arrangements were complete for a senior representative match against Mid-Canterbury at Kaiapoi on January 30 and a junior representative match against Malvern on the United courts on February 6. - Magistrate's Court Returns Decreases are shown in nearly all the Rangiora Magistrate's Court returns for the quarter ended December 31, 1936, compared with those for the corresponding quarter of 1935. Only in the number of summonses served by bailiff and children's court cases heard are increases shown. Personal Mr and Mrs G. C. Beattie have left Rangiora to spend a fortnight at Picton. Mr A. Wells Newton (clerk to the Eyre County Council) is a patient at Braemar private hospital, Rangiora. Presentation to Cricket Club Two silver-mounted, leather cricket balls have been presented to the Rangiora Cricket Club by a vice-president. They will be used as trophies to be given to the holders of the best bowling averages in the senior and junior teams respectively, at the end of the present season. Lodge Meetings The installation of Bro. J. J. McBrearty into the presidency of the No. 4 District took place at a meeting of the Rangiora Druids' Lodge on Monday evening. The ceremony was performed by Bro. W. Green, D.P., and the president of the No. 7 District, Bro. Dacre, was also present. Bro. W. R. Robb. A.D., presided at the meeting. Sick pay amounting to £7 13s 4d was passed for payment. Degrees were conferred by the Lecture Master (Bro. F. R. Minchington, P.G.). at a meeting of the Loyal Rangiora Lodge. 10.0. F., M.U., on Monday evening. Bro. J. W. Heward, N.G., presided. A claim for the payment of a n\aternity allowance was approved. Morgan Pennant Cricket Matches To begin the Morgan pennant competition of one-day matches on Saturday was a decision made at a meeting of the North Canterbury Cricket SubAssociation in Rangiora last evening. The president, Mr H. A. Bennett, presided. The competition will last for six weeks during the harvest season, after which the usual inter-club matches will be resumed. Entries have already been received, as follows: Rangiora Club, two teams; Kaiapoi Club, two teams; Woodend, two teams; Loburn, one team. DOYLESTON ATHLETIC CLUB MEETING ALLOWED TO LAPSE FOR YEAR A meeting of the Doyleston Athletic Club was nek", on Monday evening, Mr W. Pearce presiding. Consideration was given to.the question of whether the sports postponed from Boxing Day because of the health restrictions should be held in the autumn. It was decided to allow the fixture to lapse until next Boxing Day. Reporting on the finances, the secretary gave the receipts as £4O 14s 6d and expenses as £47 2s lid, leaving a debit of £6 8s sd, with £l9 still to be collected in members' subscriptions. Members admitted that the position was more satisfactory than they had anticipated. A prize given by the secretary for the seller of thj largest number of tickets in a competition was awarded to Mr H. Johnson. It was decided to hold a meeting in April to consider improvements to the cycling track in Osborne Park. The Ellesmere County Council was thanked for assistance with the track. KIRWEE TENNIS CLUB A pleasant evening organised by the Kirwee Tennis Club was spent at "Kahautara," the residence of Mr and Mrs R. M. Wilson Dancing, competitions, and games were enjoyed. Songs were sung by Messrs N. Wilson and F. Lavender. Music for the dancing was played by Misses B. and Y. Begg, G. Thompson, Mesdames Begg and Wilson. A competition was won by Miss Aileen Gilman (Christchurch). During the evening the Rev* T. Paterson, on behalf of the tennis club, made a small presentation to Miss J. Bfidgewater and expressed regret at her departure from the district. Those present included Mr and Mrs G. R. Bedford, Mr and Mrs R. M. Wilson, Mesdames G. Begg, Eden, Misses J. Bridgewater, B.
