COMPETITION FOR RHODES CUP AKAROA BEATS DUVAUCHELLE The three sets in the match between Akaroa and Duvauchelle in the Rhodes Cup competition which were postponed because of rain, were concluded at Akaroa. Duvauchelle won the three sets, and the match ended with eight sets to Akaroa and eight to Duvauchelle. Akaroa won, however, by nine games. RYEGRASS IN COCKSFOOT SEED REDUCTION IN PROPORTION THIS SEASON Mr F. G. Armstrong (president) presided at a meeting of the committee of the Akaroa Cocksfoot Seed Growers' Association. Mr W. H. Montgomery, who had given up growing cocksfoot, forwarded his resignation, which was received with regret. The Agricultural Department notified that in future only 5 per cent, of ryegrass would be allowed in cocksfoot, instead of 6 per cent, as previously. It was decided to circularise growers about this ziid to draw their attention to the : need for maintaining as high a standard as possible. It was considered that growers would exercise great care this year to avoid ryegrass. The chairman and Messrs W. H. Moore, S. J. Vogan, T. Mould, and W. E. t M. Jacobson (secretary) were appointed to wait on the Christchurch seed merchants to discuss the handling of the present season's crop and other matters of interest. After a long discussion about exhibitors of cocksfoot at the local and other agricultural and pastoral shows, it was agreed to ask 'the Agricultural Department if it would judge and classify samples and offer any suggestions which would help to make the classes more interesting. The secretary was appointed to make further enquiries and to report later. It was reported that the growers were prepared to pay 2s to 2a 6d an hour and found for the best harvesting workers. SOUTHBRIDGE AFFAIRS MEETING OF TOWN BOARD Commissioner J. H. Hampton presided over the monthly meeting of the Southbridge Town Board. The overseer's report on water-race and road repair work was considered, and it Was decided to procure shingle for street repairs and fine gravel for footpaths. The construction of a concrete channel in Lee street was considered but the cost was stated to be prohibitive at present. » The need for training more volunteers to operate the town fire-fighting plant was emphasised. It was decided to impose the 10 pur cent, penalty on outstanding rate's on February 18. KAIKOURA NEWS TENNIS CLUB'S DANCE The Kowhai Tennis Club held a dance in the Suburban Hall, Kaikoura, and the finances of the club will benefit substantially. Sabiston's orchestra played the music, a"nd extras were | played by Misses E. and M. Wareham and Mary Mackle. Mr C. Wareham was master of ceremonies. The lucky spot dance was won by Miss Moran and partner. Bowls The following are the results of the bowling matches played on the Kaikoura Bowling green at the week-end: Clark and Baines 22, Stewart and J. C. Smith 21; McLennan and Hayward 19, A. E.
