ASSISTANCE FOR MOTORISTS
ADVICE BY POST OFFICES SUGGESTED WEATHER AND CONDITION OF CREEKS ON OTIRA ROAD A suggestion that the Post and Telegraph Department should assist motorists travelling on the Christchurch Greymouth road by publishing in the more important post offices en route twice daily particulars of the weather and conditions of the creeks on the road, was made yesterday by Mr W. F. Harley, - secretary of the Grey branch of the Automobile Association, Canterbury.
At. present motorists travelling, over this road had to depend on the Automobile Association, which received its advice from passing motorists who had been over the road perhaps the day previously,. or on the Public Works Department, which received information about the blockages to the road, and not the condition of the creeks,. Mr Harley said. If this advice were given it would not entail much trouble, and would save motorists much time and expense, he • said. Only last week several cars had been trapped in the Bruce creek, and perhaps if they had received advice at Springfield Post Office about the condition of the creek they would not have continued their journey by car. He said that it might be possible to get reports from the Cass, Bealey, Arthur’s Pass, and Otira Post Offices.
The scheme need not necessarily be confined to this particular route, Mr Harley said.
