MARIST A DRAWS WITH UNITED The No, 2 ground at the Recreation Domain and the Cobden Domain were not available for cricket during the week-end, after the recent wet weather, and the only cricket match

played at Greymouth during the weekend was that between Marist A and United. The game was a draw. Batting first, Marist made 116 on a wicket which was very slow (O. Morris 33, J, Cullen 21, F. Bayley 20, and A, Hopkinson not out 11). For United B. Mann took five wickets for 28 runs and P. Allen took three for 36.

At stumps United had lost seven wickets tor 85 runs (M. Marshall 41, B. Marshall 30, and L. Coffey 7 ndt out), O. Morris took four wickets for 34 runs for Marist, and H. Greenwood took three for 38.. Miss N. McKechnie (Christchurch), who has been spending a holiday with Mrs H, Hambleton, Puketahi street, will leave on return to Christchurch t0 Mr y A. Beasley (Christchurch), who has been inspecting the totalisators at the West Coast race meetings, Jeft on return to Christchurch yesterday. Mr J. B. O’Regan, who has been spending a holiday on the West Coast, will return to Wellington to-day. Mr N. Rose, who has been spending a holiday at Greymouth with his parents, will leave on return to-day. Mr S. W. S. Strong, who has been mining engineer for the Grey district since the inception of the gold prospecting scheme, will leave to-day on transfer to Wellington. Mr Strong will visit Greymouth only periodically in future for inspections. . ,Mr,G. A. Jupp (Greymouth) will now be in charge' of the district from Greymouth to the Wataroa river. Mr R. Chibnall, formerly of the police force, Ashburton, who has been appointed main highways traffic inspector for the Greymouth district, will arrive this week. Mr J. H. Clark, whom : he will replace, will leave on- transfer on promotion to Christchurch next week. ' ; Mr L. Sumpter, who was .until recently a barrister and solicitor at Oamaru, arrived at Greymouth yesterday afternoon, and will practise here. , , Mr A. Baird, who has been spending a holiday with his parents at Invercargill, returned'to Greymouth,by the express yesterday. SHIPPING AT WESTPORT During December 23 steamers and four auxiliary sailing vessels, totalling 15,447 tons, entered the port of Westport, and 26 steamers and five auxiliary sailing vessels, representing a total of 20,616 tons, departed, making the total for the month 36,063 tons. The mean high water depth in the river was 25ft 3.9 in, and on the bar 22ft ll.Sin. The total rainfall registered at the signal station gauge for the month was 6.19 in. Rain fell on 18 days during the month. '
