FEWER CRIMINAL SITTINGS RETURNS FOR LAST QUARTER OP 1936 There were six fewer sittings of the Magistrate’s Court at Greymouth during the last quarter of 1936, compared with the corresponding period of 1935. In 1936 there were 16 sittings, and in 1935 there were 22 sittings. t The returns are as follows, those for 1935 being given in parenthesis:— Sittings presided over by the magistrate:—Civil 6 (7), criminal 16 (22); justices of the peace—civil nil (nil), criminal 6 (3); totals 6 (7), 22 (25). Civil cases tried—magistrate 4 (4), justices of the peace nil (nil); cases heard in chambers 45 (24): children’s court 21 (17), plaints entered 124 (287); civil warrants issued 4 (9), executed by the bailiffs 3 (9); judgment summonses 19 (36); summonses served by bailiff within one mile, 74 (159); outside one mile, 12 (56); civil summonses served by registered post, 32 (50); criminal cases tried, males 126 (126), females 2 (6); total, 128 (132); civil fees paid, £l3B 18s 6d (£258 12s 6d); criminal fees paid, £33 14s 6d (£39 4s); fines, £9l 17s 6d (£B2 17s); total, £264 10s 6d (£3BO 13s 6d); amount sued for, £2982 10s 8d (£3173 9s 2d); amount claimed in court, £2982 10s 8d (£1936 7s); amount recovered. £872 2s 8d (£1873). GREYMOUTH WARDEN’S COURT BUSINESS DURING QUARTER A total of 89 miners’ rights were issued by the Greymouth Warden’s Court during the quarter, just ended. Sittings of the court were held on seven days, one defended case was heard, two undefended cases, and one disputed application. A total of 52 applications were received, there were 66 registrations, 39 mining licenses granted, and one plaint entered. Fiftyfour rent receipts were issued, and revenue collected amounted to £249 8s Bd. DEATH OF WELL-KNOWN MINER The death occurred at Wellington of Jack Lavis, who was a well known and popular figure at the Blackwater mine at Waiuta. Mr Lavis. who had lived at Waiuta for about 10 years, worked continuously at the mine until failing health compelled him to retire. Personal Mrs Robinson (Christchurch) is visiting her sons. Messrs S. L. and J. Robinson, at Reefton, Mrs Reid (New Brighton), together with hfer son and daughter, are spending a holiday in Reefton as the guests of Mrs Scarlett. Mr R.
