SEPTIC TONSILS

TO THE EDITOR OF THE PRESS. Sir, —Your correspondent, “Sufferer,” asks for a cure for septic tonsils. When in California last year I was informed of the treatment recommended by a German physician, who held that an operation was rarely necessary. My informant knew of several cases where a simple treatment had cured the trouble and averted an impending operation. .■ , . The treatment is, entirely to avoid all sugars and starches for six weeks —nothing more.—Yours, etc., H.C. January 7, 1937.

TO THE EDITOR OK THE PftfcSS. Sir,—ln reply to “Sufferer,” who wants to know the best thing to do about septic tonsils, with your permission I will pass on the truth according to the gospel of Dr. Martin Ross, M.D.. the noted nose and throat specialist, ot New York. And while I am on the job allow me to thank you for the pleasure I get out of “Peter Trolove s page,” largely due to the latitude you allow and the free and fair way you hold the ring. If my light in life is' the One, Holy, and True Roman Catholic Church, Peter’s light is Sir Oliver Lodge. Nevertheless I love ‘Peter s kindly outlook and his youthful mind. Dr. Ross is instructor in rhinolaryngology (nose and throat), New York Post-Graduate Medical School and Hospital. His latest book telling just what tonsils are and how to take care of them tells in language that the layman can understand. He says the septic tonsil is the site of certain organisms that live and thrive within the tonsil. Medical treatment of this infection is unreliable. It is almost impossible completely to clear the tonsil recesses because they are so narrow and take such twisted paths that no local measure can reach them. Even if sterilisation - were possible, there is no way of preventing reinfection. There are. fortunately, , a great number of infected conditions that do not call for removal of the tonsils, says Dr, Ross, but theye is very little that the patient can do for himself. The most satisfactory way is by a proper diet and irrigation, and that is a job for a specialist. ,TL, “Sufferer”

would like to road the story of tonsils by Dr. Ross I will gladly lend him the b °° k ‘ BROTHER. January 8, 1937.
