TRAMWAY MATTERS

■TO THE EDITOR OF THE PRESS. - Sir, —Might I be spared space to ask a few questions 'regarding; our ChristchUrch trams? First, some time ago, it was decided to repaint the trams as they required doing, "i.e„ body red, facings yellow, and ropf grey. There is already one Car (No. 179) on the road with the new colour scheme, apart from the new buses and the Avonside bus, but I have noticed one of the old type car (No. 40) has just received a fresh coat of paint of the old cream and green colour. Certainly the j new colours look much brighter and fresher. Why is it that No. 40 has not been painted in the new colours? Has the board decided to abandon the idea of a brighter colour scheme? . Second, to my mind, the way advertisements are displayed on the big boards outside the 'cars seems very haphazard. The one-man cars are liberally displayed l with outside advertisements, while cars numbers 30 to 47 ;seem to be neglected in this direction. A:' close observation will Show /that the following cars have, blank boards, viz.: Number 30, one board; 38, one board; 39, two boards; 40, two boards; 43, one board; 46, one board. This makes a total of eight boards not displaying advertisements. Whv is it that , all the advertisements seem to be displayed on one-man cars? Are the old type of car going off the Fendalton-Opawa run, and a better car, with an equally better service going to be given to our tram-Users? It certainly is time the number 9 and 13 routes were considered for an improved time-table, with better cars.— Yours, etc., OLD TRAMS. January 6, 1937. [“No cars have been painted since car 179 went into traffic,” said an official of the Christchurch Tramway Board When this letter was referred to him. Several cars have been cleaned up, including. No. 40, but the only painting that has been done has been where the paint has worn off outside parts, such as windows. Cars will only be painted in the new colours when the old paint is worn off altogether. The advertisements are placed in the cars according to the request of the advertising contractor, and there are times when he secures an order only by promising display in special cars.”]
