NOTES ON THE RACING ITHE PRESS Special Service.) GREYMOUTH, December 29. Rebel Chief and Malvasia were the opening day winners again to score at Hokitika to-day, and their efforts were most decisive, particularly that of Rebel Chief, who won effortlessly. The club's starter, Mr G. Reed, of Christchurch. secured excellent dispatches. A Riccarton Novice The Novice Stakes produced a good. finish, and was won from the rear by Roy Bun in a convincing fashion. Guillotine missed the jump out, but was soon with the leaders, Gilford, Arrowglen, and Metric. Securing a run on the rails at the distance, Roy Bun came through to win in hollow fashion by a length from Gilford, with Metric half a length away. Arrowglen. who displayed little dash, was next, followed by Lady Bun. A Comfortable Win Malvasia showed splendid form to take the honours in the Stafford Hack Handicap. Derive was slow away, and Maroha took up the running from Malvasia, but after a furlong Malvasia was the pilot from Maroha, Gold Label, The Sandwichman, and Hunting Bag. Gold Label and The Sandwichman made a dash home, but it was not sustained, and Malvasia won smartly from Maroha, with Hunting Bag and Gold Label next. A Cheap Purchase Copvist followed up his splendid first day's form to take the honours easily in the Summer Handicap. Silver Slipper, a warm favourite, missed the jump out, and was never dangerous. Copyist led throughout from Culotte and Arena, the latter outsprinting Culotte in the run to the post. Copyist was purchased by the present ownertrainer, A. Stewart, of Kumara, for £l3 after the New Zealand Cup meeting. Field Outclassed* Rebel Chief had an easy task in the W. E. Williams' Memorial Handicap, which he won from a smart field, leading throughout. Fiord went an improved race, and after being badly placed in the early stages, put in some smart work over the last quarter, to beat the remainder home. Land Raid's was also a creditable effort, as he was severely checked when in a good position going out of-the straight. Monipere was a moderate fourth, never threatening danger, whilst Metal Bird, who was up with the leader in the early stages, drifted after six furlongs. Rebel Chief finished three lengths clear of Fiord, with Land Raid two lengths away, then Monipere, Metal Bird, Free Rose, and Gay Colleen 1 Two-Horse Tussle Three withdrawals left only two starters for the President's Handicap, but the race nevertheless produced a great finish, Golden Dart prevailing fry half a neck. Arrowmid made all V/fe' running to the straight, where Golden Dart, who was at short odds, gradually overhauled her. A Surprise A blanket finish between the placed trio in the Goldsborough Handicap saw the moderately supported Gas Mask outsprint Rotokino and the warm favourite, Silver Slipper. Wee Musk led Silver Slipper, Gas Mask, and Rotokino to the distance, where the placed trio flashed into line, Gas Mask prevailing in a punishing finish by a neck from Rotokino, with Silver Slipper a head away. Gas Mask was fourth, then Dark Rose, who trailed the field early. Long Overd/ue Cyclonic, backed down to a short price in the Railway High-weight Handicap, fully justified his support. He trailed Delium to the straight entrance, where he finished full of running, to take the honours easily from Delium, with Back Lead half a length away. Nautipol was a creditable
fourth, then Polistina. Acla failed to negotiate the turning track. PROGRAMME FOR THIRD DAY TTHE PRESS Special Service.) . GREYMOUTH, December 29.
