A Close Call Day Dress, a good favourite for the apprentices' race, duly won, but her backers were subjected to a good deal of anxiety before the race was over. S|e got out well and was handy early, but drifted right back in the middle stages, so that over the last half she was standing up the pacemaker, Cloudy Bay, several lengths. Once her rider settled down and rode her, however, iristead of hitting her with his hand, she finished very fast and overwhelmed Cloudy Bay at the finish. Going Gay and Lucullus Lad were the best of the others. £ A Close Finish tWindward, favourite for the HighWeight, just failed to reach En Vidette x& a close finish, in which Trevellyn Hold and Lady Wessex were also in line. Windward was a trifle unlucky, having to force his way through the leading bunch in the straight. The vernier improved in the softer going. $ Placings Reversed .iLazybones was a ertainty beaten in tfle juvenile race. Last to leave tbx' «|a r k in the big field, he swept right rijund everything on the turn to finish fourth, close up, and going better than ajiy of them. The race was featured by a greatly improved showing by the «rey colt Screamer. Allspice. Icing, and Screamer ran together in the lead to the straight, where Screamer pushed fight over on them, badly cutting back Ijsing and also interferi g to a less ejetent with Allspice. Screamer then r#n on to win from Allspice, with Icing Wming again" for third money, and Eazybones next, Screen Star heading tfle bunch. There was never anything in it but the first th:ee, and Icing unwubtedly was unlucky, but Screamer Won well, : id showed he is a good galloper. Mt.the subsequent enquiry Screamer Jas relegated to third place, Allspice *j>eing placed first and Icinc second. Lowenberg Succeeds , ; There were only five runners in the Liverpool Handicap, which was won Afairly decrively by the favourite, /\ lowenberg. Top Notch made the early v Pace, and was then joined by Lowenberg and Aussie Ra. Lowenberg had Charge entering -he straight, where Spiral challenged, but Lowenberg held "to too well for the top-weight. Top Notch faded out, to finish last, Limophm running on for a moderate third. The smaller field, softer going, and 9-7 .-(to Spiral were all factors in favour of the winner, who was doing his best ■in the straight. V An Overdue Win i Black .hread broke a long sequence of failures when he won the Westbury Handicap, but he had the largest following. With A. E. Elli. in the saddle, he won all the way. but was hard Pressed at the finish by Dawning ,*-ight, while Golden Chest, who went ?j*ith the winner throu"hout, was a flose third. Dawning Light hung out round the turn. Thermidor did not go ?o well as on the previous days. - A Narrow Defeat ' Hunting Queen, the favourite for the Wood Handicap, was narrowly defeated #>y the outsider. Full Throttle, who to the front with Hunting Mars :early.. and outfought the favourite in
the straight. Hunting Queen, however, was in difficulties entering the straight, but for which she might have won. Grand Jury and Passion Flower were close up. Field Outclassed Laughing Lass, a strong favourite for the sprint, won with ease all the way, outclassing her opponents. Lavina, who went after her in the straight, weakened at the finish and was beaten for second by the stronger-finishing Dolla Bill. Christmas Handicap Pango scored a decisive win in the Christmas Handicap from Terry and Calshot, who carried the bulk of the investments. Pango. always handy, went up on the turn rmd went away in the straight for a decisive win. Terry came fror- <h n b"ck and got up on the fence to 1 off Calshot at the post, and Cricket, who got off poorly, was next. '
