FATAL JUMP TO AVOID TRAIN

♦ MAN'S DEATH IN TAURANGA HARBOUR (PKZSS ASSOCIATION TELEGRAM.) TAURANGA, December 28. About 6.10 p.m. Charles Haua, aged about 60 years, while crossing the railway bridge over Tauranga har- ! bour, saw a train approaching from the Matapihi side. To avoid being struck, Haua jumped into the harbour. I The incident was observed by persons on the beach. B. Sneddon (Tauranga) and Jack Astell <a visiting yachtsman from Wellington) immediately put off in a dinghy, and picked up Haua, who was brought ashore in an unconsiious condition. Messrs Campbell, C. Hiohet (Wellington), and McMaster (Tauranga) tried to resuscitate Haua. and worked for 45 minutes without avail. He evidently had died from heart failure. Haua in his younger days was a noted athlete. A few months ago he was caueht in a similar position on the bridge, on that occasion falling into the harbour and being rescued.
