TROUT FISHING
GOOD CATCHES REPORTED' m THE SOUTH CONDITIONS OK RIVERS AND LAKES IMPROVED Improved angling conditions and some excellent catches, including 9Jb rainbow and 831b brown trout, were reported by the ranger to the South Canterbury Acclimatisation Society, Mr F. W. Pellett, when questioned by a reporter in Temuka yesterday. The rivers, he said, were clear and in good order, but recent heavy rain would no doubt cause the rivers to become somewhat swollen and discoloured, making fly fishing more difficult. The prospects for the holiday period were, however, good, and there had already been a large influx of visiting campers and anglers from Auckland, Christchurch, Ashburton, Dunedin, and Oamaru. Of the many anglers' baskets examined, few had not shown good catches, and anglers in the Opihi river were having marked success. These catches would be further improved if the rains flooded the river, for a number of trout would then ascend from the sea, Mr Pellett said. All fish examined were found to be in the pink of condition, their food supply apparently being adequate. A number of the river trout were 41b in weight, but at Lake Alexandria, where conditions were greatly improved, Mr J. Ireland had landed a 91b rainbow trout, and Mr T. Barnard (Timaru) a perfect specimen of brown trout weighing Bflb. Many other good bags had also been recorded.
