LYTTELTON NEWS
* RAIN DELAYS SHIPPING 'Heavy rain showers delayed work on the waterfront at Lyttelton yesterday. The accumulation of shipping in port over the holidays has made the waterfront very busy, and the departure of some of the vessels was delayed. Collection For Bible Society A collection made in Lyttelton recently for the British and Foreign Bible Society resulted in £22 lis 5d being realised. Magistrate's Court "The Government takes a very serious view of this class of offence" remarked the chairman of the bench (Mr W. C. Cleary, J.P.) at the Magistrate's Court yesterday in convicting John William Thomas Laming, a waterside worker, of being drunk while in charge of a motor-car. With Mr Cleary on the Bench was Mr W. D. Gower, JJP. Laming, who pleaded guilty, was fined £5, in default 14 days' imprisonment, and was ordered to pay costs and witness's expenses amounting to £1 ss, and his license was cancelled for six months. Sergeant D. Wilson said that, in company with Constable C. Jackways, he was returning from Corsair Bay at 12.15 a.m. on Sunday. Laming overtook them in his car, driving about 20 miles an hour and on his correct side of the road. Just after Laming turned a corner in Simeon quay, they heard a crash and saw the lights of another car at the corner. He found that a slight collision had occurred between Laming's car and another car. The other car had stopped within a few feet, but Laming's car travelled 76 yards before stopping. Accused came back and showed signs of liquor. He admitted having taken a few drinks. The accused was then examined by Dr. B. H. Gilmour, who certified that he was intoxicated and not fit to be in charge of a car. In answer to a question from tha Bench, Laming replied that he had nothing to say.
