FIVE MORE CASES IN HOSPITAL

ALL FROM DUNEDIN AND SUBURBS

THREE SHOW DEFINITE SIGNS OF INFECTION

(FKBSS ASSOCIATION TILEQBAM.) DUNEDIN, December 15. Five more cases of actual or suspected infantile paralysis were admitted to the Dunedin Hospital today, three of these showing definite paralysis, while the other two are being kept under observation. All the patients came from Dunedin and suburbs, and there still appears to be no indication that the epidemic is spreading further afield. To-day's cases bring the total up to 22 since the outbreak of the epidemic. Every precaution is being taken to prevent the disease from spreading, and all children's camps have been abandoned. The tour of two teams of the Otago Boys' Cricket Association to Christchurch has been cancelled.

ONE WELLINGTON SUSPECT

(PRESS ASSOCIATION TELEGKAM.) WELLINGTON, December 15. A nine-year-old girl was admitted to the Wellington Hospital today from Tawa Flat as an infantile paralysis suspect. No definite diagnosis has yet been made. It is emphasised that at the worst the case is no more than suspect.

NO CASES AT AUCKLAND

(FR*3S ASSOCIATIOB TELEGRAM.) AUCKLAND, December 15. No cases of infantile paralysis have so far been reported to the Health Department in Auckland. In accordance with instructions received from the Minister for Health (the Hon. P. Fraser) on Monday, all State schools were closed to-day. Several secondary school gatherings which had been arranged were cancelled, and others were curtailed.

HEALTH DEPARTMENT'S RECOMMENDATIONS

, (PRESS ASSOCIATION TELEORAM.) WELLINGTON, December 15. In view of the infantile paralysis outbreak, the Health Department strongly advises as a precautionary measure that health camps as at present arranged for be not held. Authority, however, has been given to utilise health camps to give a very necessary change to children in orphanages and public institutions, as such can be dealt with in groups and without any intermingling with the general population. All school dental clinics have been closed, and a suggestion has been issued that gatherings such as scout camps and Sunday schools be postponed. OPENING OF SCHOOL POSTPONED NEW NORTH JAN WOOD kindergarten Because of the instructions of the Government Health Inspector for Canterbury, Dr. T. Fletcher Telford, that schools should immediately disband and no indoor functions for children should be held as a precaution against the spreading of infantile paralysis, the official opening of the new North Dinwood Free Kindergarten, which was to have been held yesterday, has been postponed until the reopening of the schools in February. Instead, however, an informal function was held to give parents an opportunity to inspect the new building* which ’is of the open-air type and also contains facilities for social gatherings. There was a good attendance. Mr Wi Grigg, the builder, distributed toys to pupils from a Christmas tree, after which afternoon tea was served, The architect for the building was Mr W. A. Trengrove.
