OBITUARY
MRS P. ORSBOURNE The death occurred at Christchurch on Saturday, after a long illness, of Mrs Phoebe Orsbourne, wife of Mr J. Orsbourne, of Reefton. Mrs Orsb.our. e was a native of Reeftca and had been an inmate of a hospital in Christchurch for some months. She is survived by her parents, her husband.,and a young family of five, the eldest being 16. FUNERAL MR S. H. MAKKIS The widespread esteem in. which Mr S. H. Marris was held was indicated by the very large attendance at the funeral at the Orawaiti cemetery on Saturday afternoon. The cortege was one of the largest ever seen in Westport. In addition to relatives the mourners included the Mayor of Wdstport (Mr J. Kilkenny) and members of the Borough Council, Mr R. J, Hawes (chairman of the Duller County Council), and Councillors, representatives of the Westport-Karamea Co-operative Timber Company, with which Mr Marris was closely associated, the Karamea Shipping Company, the local branch of the Returned Soldiers’ Association, Lieutenant Mathewson and other members of the Westport territorial unit, the Municipal Band, representatives of the Masonic Lodge and many other organisations. The pall-bearers were Messrs R. Gilbank, G. Ray, M. Rind, and T. Anderson. The service was read by the Rev. L. K. Collins, of Granity. WESTPORT PERSONAL ITEMS Mr N. A. Vercoe, of Nelson, visited Westport and Hokitika during the week-end. Mr and Mrs D. Seyb, formerly of Wellington, arrived in Westport on Saturday night to take up their residence here. Mr Seyb takes the place in the Westport office of the Public Works Department of Mr S. Carter, who has been transferred to Arapuni. Mr E. T. Broker, manager of St. James’ Theatre, Westport, commenced his annual leave during the week-end and left for the glaciers with his mother. They will later proceed to Christchurch. Mr P. Stewart was the successful applicant for the position of caretaker of the Westport Municipal Baths. Mr F. Wood, who has been visiting Dunedin, returned to Westport on Saturday. Mrs F. A. Marriott, of Westport, is spending a few days in Marlborough. Mr C. Foote, of Westport, who is attending Otago University, arrived home on Saturday. Mr and Mrs J. Taylor, formerly of Russell street, Westport, have left for Sydney, where they intend to make their home. Captain Knox, who was chief officer of the Union Steam Ship Company’s vessel Wainui, has been appointed to the staff of the Westport dredge. The Hon. W. H, Mclntyre, chairman of the Nelson Education Board, will leave for Nelson to-morrow to meet the Minister for Education (the Hon. P. Fraser), who will visit schools in the Motueka, Takaka, and Collingwood districts. There was a large attendance at the funeral of Mr A. M. Brown at the Orawaiti cemetery on Sunday. The service was read by the Rev. S. W, Webber and the pall-bearers were Messrs R. Black, J. Brown, A. Swan, and G. Swan.
