EYRE COUNTY COUNCIL

The monthly meeting of the Eyre County Council was attended by Messrs H, A. Bennett ( chairman), R. O. Dixon, H. E. Evans, J. E. Horrell, and A. J. Rich. Several complaints were received from ratepayers about wandering stock. No applications were received for the position of ranger for the Eyre riding, and it was left for the chairman to m»'ke arrangements privately. It was decided to accept the offer of the North Canterbury Power Board for an amended charge for street lighting.

The Main Highways Board wrote refusing to increase the amount »o be subsidised by them for land to be purchased for the proposed road deviation at Ohapuku, and it was decided to inform the two owners that failing the acceptance by them of a slightly increased offer by the county the land would have to be under the Public Works Act and the price left to the Compensation Court, with probable considerable costs. Mr A. W. Fairman was appointed a pound-keeper at Ohoka. It was decided to ask the River Trust to make repairs to the north side of the Eyre river at West Eyreton. where erosion was taking place. The clerk reported having banked £1705 during the month mainly as a result of the 5 per cent, discount concession and that if all moneys due from the Main Highways Board were promptly received, the council should have a credit of about £l2O after paying the monthly account. He said that the 5 per cent, discount concession had brought in 45 per cent, of the total rates struck. The resignation of Mr S. R. Jenning as caretaker of the West Eyreton Baths was left to Mr Horrell. It was decided only to patch the bitumen sides of the North road, leaving any borough reconstruction to the Main Highways Board after it had taken over control. Mr Horrell reported that proposed repairs to the West Eyreton Baths were estimated to cost £BO, which amount it was hoped to raise from the public, and any balance not so collected from the council.
