BUILDING SCHEME SUBSIDY
GRANT OF £8367 MADE AT ASHBURTON
TOTAL OF 151 APPLICATIONS
During the operation of the Unemployment Board's house building subsidy scheme from July, 1934, to September 30 this year, 151 applications for subsidy of a value of £107,132 17s Cd were approved in Ashburton, and subsidy amounting to £0367 11s was granted. The number of applications declined was seven. On the closing day 15 applications under the scheme were received at Ashburton. The scheme was one of the measures for the relief of unemployment put into operation by the previous Government. The subsidy was payable on a basis of Is for each square foot on all new and totally enclosed floor space, and not to exceed 8 per cent, of the contract price, with a maximum subsidy of £BO. In the case of residential flats the subsidy did not exceed 6 per cent, of the total cost. One of the objects of the scheme, which applied to new dwelling houses or other approved buildings, was to ensure the use of New Zealand materials throughout. A reduction of the amount of subsidy paid was made because of specified articles which were net of New Zealand manufacture, and which were used in the building. An alteration was made on June 19 this year, and the scheme applied only to new dwellings of a capital cost not exceeding £7OO.
