WATERFRONT IMPROVEMENTS AT LYTTELTON

TO THE EDITOB OF THE PRESS. Sir, —Now that the Lyttelton Borough Council has made a fine road as far as the railway near the dock, it is the Lyttelton Harbour Board’s turn to do its share and help complete what could be made into one of the best roads in the port. The cattle loading platform and yards at the dock. head should be removed to opposite the patent slip: this would eive a wide road and a clear view to the proposed site of the new playing area on the reclamation. The Harbour Board is receiving big rents from the oil companies, and it is high time some money was soent on the roads past these tanks. The present state of the property in the vicinity is no credit to any public body. Why the Harbour Board has dozens of small stacks of old and new timber scattered about the port is a puzzle. Surely it could make one big stack on the reclamation and clean up some parts of the waterfront. The car parking area for boat owners is quite inadequate, and could, with little difficulty, be made much larger. Boat owners have to pay for their moorings, and as there are quite a large number of pleasure craft in Lyttelton. the revenue derived from this source is quite a large sum. and a little of it spent in the interest of those concerned would do an immense amount of good to the port. Work in this Vicinity could be found for at least 12 men for three or four months. This in itself would do good in relieving unemployment: besides making the road to the playing area and through the domain much safer. This part of the port is extensively used by a large section of the community during the summer months, so much so, that it has been suggested to the Railway Department that it run the train to the dock head on Sundays and public holidays. Sureiy something can be done by the railways, the Harbour Board, and the Borough Council to remove what is now an eyesore.—Yours, etc., ADVANCE. Lyttelton, November 14, 1936.
